When I told my girls the idea I had for a holiday party, I thought their heads might explode. We were going to plan party that included: their friends, American Girl dolls, baking and holiday fun. They screamed with excitement when I told them and then we got right to planning.
I wanted to do a baking party with the girls on our block. My plan was to spend the afternoon baking and then to deliver cookies we made to the other people on the street. My girls and their friends in the neighborhood spent all summer playing with the American Girl dolls together. When I saw the new American Girl for Williams-Sonoma line, I knew it would be perfect for our baking party. If you have anyone on your holiday shopping list that likes American Girl and baking, this line makes the perfect gifts.
Here are a few favorites:
For the dolls: Williams-Sonoma Cupcake Set for Dolls
The guests brought their American Girl dolls to the party and when they arrived all of the girls and dolls got matching aprons. We set the dolls aside to all “hang out” while we baked.
For the party, we used a sugar cookie recipe from the American Girl Baking cookbook. We made it the night before since the book recommends chilling it overnight to roll it out for shapes. This gave us plenty of dough for making great Christmas cookies at the party. I cleaned a large work surface so the girls could cover it with flour and then roll and cut plenty of cookies.
Then, so they could make a recipe from the book at the party, we made the Thumbprint Cookies from the American Girl Baking cookbook too. These were fun to make and the girls loved making their thumbprints in the cookies and then filling them with jelly. The recipes in the American Girl cookbooks are easy to follow and perfect for kids.
While the cookies cooked and cooled, we made little boxes to them. I got red boxes at the craft store along with holiday stickers and ribbons.
It was so nice to see all of the girls excited to deliver the cookies we made to the neighbors on our block and everyone who received the cookies were surprised and delighted. I think this baking party is going to become a new neighborhood tradition!
