Someone is already five months old! It’s hard to believe that our sweet little Avery is approaching the six month birthday & will soon be halfway to one. This age is so fun & cute. I love the huge toothless smiles. I also love the small little giggles & coos. And I love the way that her whole body lights up when we enter the room in the morning to wake her. Our little baby is starting to reach some big milestones this month including scooting, her first taste of food, & sleeping in her crib for the first time. Today, I am excited to share a little more about the fifth month of life with our baby girl.
The biggest milestone that we reached this month is that our little girl is on the go. She has mastered the art of rolling over which means that she rolls and rolls and rolls around on the floor. Avery has also started scooting along on the floor, which means that her big brothers and sister have a new person to watch out for! She is so proud of her little self as she scoots around on the floor with a giant smile on her face. It’s hard to believe that we now have four kids to chase in this house!
Her favorite place to play is right on the floor surrounded by toys. We often place her on a blanket (or her playmat) with toys surrounding her. She loves to look at books & loves to get her hands on any paper that she can find (often one of her brother’s stories or her sister’s coloring!). Other favorite toys include her taggie blanket, her colorful caterpillar, & her hands and feet. Another favorite toy includes her exersaucer…
She loves to stand up and play in her exersaucer! We keep it in our kitchen so she can happily play while I am preparing meals and doing dishes. She also loves to sit up, thanks to the support of one of our favorite baby items: the Hugaboo. This baby seat allows Avery to sit up & play next to her siblings even though she can not fully sit up on her own!
Another big milestone for Avery is that she had her first taste of food. I started her brothers right at four months, but for some reason…I’m not in a hurry with Avery. (Maybe because I’m not quite ready to admit that she is getting older?!) We started her with some baby oatmeal & just began stage one foods and thankfully, she has taken to eating like a champ. We feed her just once a day, usually at dinner time. I continue to nurse her every 3-4 hours & thankfully, she continues to take a bottle so it’s easy to head out and about. She is starting to get more distracted when she nurses, so I often nurse her up in her room away from the chaos of her older siblings!
This month we have hit some huge milestones for Avery (and me!) regarding sleep. At the beginning of this month, Avery was still sleeping swaddled in her Rock & Play in our room. I knew the time was coming that she needed to move to her room, but I wasn’t quite ready for this big milestone. Well…she must have been ready because as she became a master at rolling and showing signs of scooting, I knew that it was no longer safe to have her sleeping in the Rock and Play.
We transitioned her to the crib not long after she turned five months & she has done great. When I moved her into the crib, I knew that the swaddling habit needed to end as well. We weaned the swaddle by first swaddling her without her arms in. After she mastered that, we moved her to a sleep sack and occasionally, we just place her in the crib without anything. She continues to be a good sleeper, still waking up once a night to feed and often one other time during the night looking for her pacifier.
Speaking of schedule, here is a rough idea of what our schedule looks like at five months:
5 Months Old Schedule
7 AM: Wake Up & Nurse, Playtime
9 AM-10/11 AM: Naptime
11 AM: Wake Up & Nurse, Playtime
1-2 PM: Nurse & Naptime
4 PM: Wake Up & Nurse, Playtime
(We are often out and about during the late afternoon hours, so she will often nap sometime while we are out either in the stroller or car seat.)
7 PM: Dinner of Oatmeal and/or Stage One Food, Bath (every other day)
8 PM: Nurse & Bedtime
Our little Avery is such a sweet and easy baby. She is so content with whatever our family is up to. Looking back at photos from the month, she is on the go a lot and there is hardly a picture that she is not smiling in. She has spent a lot of this month at the pool, baseball games, end of school year events, fairs & picnics, and so much more.
One of the most memorable events from this month is that we got Avery Caroline baptized on Mother’s Day. It was such a special celebration for our little girl & family. We started our day in our Sunday best and ended the day with messy hair, bare feet, and what our life normally looks like with our crew.
We are continually blessed to have Avery in our family. She is such a happy little addition and we couldn’t be more thankful for this little girl.
Happy Five Months, Little Avery!
