Simple Rainy Day Craft: Paper Plate Instruments

April 4, 2018

Ready for April showers? For us spring means getting back to playing outdoors. This is very welcomed after months of cold weather in the winter. April can also bring plenty of rainy days indoors too. Today I’m sharing an easy rainy day craft for kids: easy paper plate instruments. You probably have all of the supplies already, so it’s a good last minute activity if the kids are stuck inside this spring. Then, if the instruments get too noisy, hope for sunshine so you can send “the band” outside to play their songs!

Easy Paper Plate Instruments

Supplies:

  1. Small Paper plates
  2. Popcorn kernels: we used JOLLY TIME Pop Corn kernels
  3. Crayons or markers
  4. Stapler
  5. Popsicle stick (can skip if you don’t have)

Directions:

First have the kids draw on the paper plates. They want to draw on the back of the plate (not the side you would eat off of). Next, put some popcorn kernels onto one of the plates. Place another plate on top and help them staple around the entire plate. Staple it enough that the kernels don’t fall out.

Now here’s the fun part: you can make a few types of instruments!

  1. Make it a tambourine
  2. Make it a maraca (before you staple the entire circle of the plate, slide a popsicle stick half way in and staple close to the stick to help it in place (add a little glue too if you have it)
  3. Make a drum – use popsicle sticks to bang on your drum
  4. Make bongo drums: my girls tapped two plates of kernels together to make a set of bongo drums

Now you have a number of paper plate, popcorn kernel instruments and you can start a rainy day band!
