DIY Costumes with Bella Bliss

October 7, 2022

Making DIY Halloween costumes is one of my favorite things. Each year the kids and I plan different costumes they can help me make. We had so much fun making these Bella Bliss DIY Costumes. Bella Bliss clothes have been in our home for over 12 years and worn for special occasions, holidays and for school & play. It’s such a treat to see them as part of our costumes this year.

If you’ve followed along with my costume making over the years you know i’m a “no-sew” gal. One of the reasons I’ve stuck with no-sew (besides the fact that I can’t sew!) is that if you don’t sew them everything can be reused. I’m a big fan of buying things for costumes that the kids will actually use for months to come and not just wear for a day.

Bella Bliss DIY Costumes

DIY Pumpkin Costume

Meet the no-sew pumpkin costume: a jack o lantern sweater that you remove the face and wear for Thanksgiving and all winter long.

Supplies:

  1. Bella Bliss Orange Sweater
  2. Black Sticky Felt
  3. Bella Bliss green shorts green shorts or pants
  4. Paper bowl
  5. Black ribbon
  6. Green pipe cleaners
  7. Orange paint
How To:
Cut a jack o lantern face out of the sticky felt and stick it onto the orange sweater. Enjoy for Halloween and peel them off to wear all season. Make sure to take them off before washing the sweater.

Paint the paper bowl orange. Once dry, poke a hole through the top and 2 sides of the bowl. Twist the pipe cleaner around a pencil to “curl it” and poke it through the hole on the top of the bowl. Cut 2 strips of ribbon, lace through the sides of the bowl and knot so they don’t fall out. Note: if you don’t think this is a safe way to hold the hat on use bobby pins or elastic

DIY If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Costume

We love making costumes to go along with our favorite books. Over the years we’ve made Amelia Bedilia, Pete the Cat and many more. This time it was Teddy’s turn and since lately he’s a bit like the mouse in this story… it was the perfect fit.

A lot of schools have kids dress as book characters for Halloween celebrations or for other reading themed weeks – this would be a perfect DIY for that!

This costume is easy:
1. Bella Bliss overalls
2. Find some fuzzy, thick yarn at the craft store and cut a piece for a tail. Pin the tail to the overalls.
3. Now you need some mouse ears! I used an old headband, the same fuzzy yarn from the tail and some stiff felt sheets. I hot glued the ears and trim to the headband and my little mouse was ready to go!
4. The book makes a good prop!

DIY Pirate Costumes

Arrggh! It’s time for some pirate costumes! The best part about this costume is that the shirt and pants are two of our closet staples: the Bella Bliss stripe polo and the Bella Bliss pants. Then we added some pirate accessories and serious pirate scowls and were all set!

Supplies:

  1. Red & white stripe shirt
  2. Navy sweats
  3. Pirate hat or red scarf
  4. Eye patch
  5. Pirate shoes
  6. Cardboard (save your Bella Bliss box)
  7. Black paint
  8. Black felt (about 1/4 yard)

Directions for the cardboard sword: Use the cardboard box your Bella Bliss clothes arrived in. Trace a pirate sword in pencil, cut it out and paint it black.

For the vest: Hold the felt around your child like a cape to see where the arm holes should go. Cut arm holes. Trim it to the right length and make the bottom jagged like a pirate’s vest. If the back pops up, fold it down and glue or pin it.

Simple DIY Lion Costume

Well this might be the easiest DIY costume of all: simply pair the Bella Bliss lion coat with some cozy clothes and a lion face drawn on with safe eyeliner. The yellow boots from Bella Bliss match perfectly too.

The lion coat from Bella Bliss is so soft and comfortable. You’ll use it long after Halloween.

DIY Queen of Hearts Costume

Supplies:

  • Bella Bliss Red Dress
  • Bella Bliss red velvet headband
  • Black Tights
  • Red Shoes
  • Red hearts: cut from felt or cardstock
  • A deck of cards
  • Red ribbon
  • Makeup
  • Wand or stick
  • Hot glue

How to Make a Queen of Hearts Collar: OK this is A LOT easier than it looks. Simply spread out the deck of card in an arch (picture lining them up in the shape of a rainbow). Do not use Queen of Hearts card (we’ll need that later). Then lifting one card at a time, put a drop of hot glue and press down. If it feels flimsy after, flip it over and add some more hot glue. Next cut a piece of ribbon longer than the arch of cards. It should be about 12 inches longer on EACH side. Glue the ribbon the the back side of the arch of cards. You want it towards the bottom of the cards. Once dry, simply tie the arch around your child, tying the ribbon in a bow. It should be stiff enough that it stands up like this.
