DIY Fabric Applique Shirts

DIY Fabric Applique Shirts : The Chirping Moms

A few weeks ago, we showed you an easy way to sew an adorable girls’ skirt, click here to see if you missed it!  But for all the boy mamas out there, including myself, I thought we needed to share an easy way to make a cute little something for our handsome little sons.  So I decided that I wanted to share this simple DIY tutorial on how to make fabric appliqué shirts—which you can really do for boys AND girls!  It’s really quite easy and doesn’t necessarily require a sewing machine—so I thought I had to share with you!

Supplies:
  • Template (You can either free hand or do a google search for templates and find about any shape!)
  • Heat and Bond Ultra-Hold
  • Fabric
  • Shirts or Baby Onesies
  • Iron
1.  Pick out a template shape!  In this case, I freehanded a boat for a lake loving little boy:)  Cut out shape.

2. Pin the template pieces to the smooth side of the Heat and Bond and cut out the shapes.

 3.  Iron on the cut out shapes on to the wrong side of your fabric.

 4.  Cut out fabric shape.  Peel off the Heat and Bond paper and iron onto the shirt in desired spot.

And voila—you have a cute shirt!  I went ahead and sewed around the edges of each shape to make sure that it would last for awhile, but I believe this step is optional.  You can also add little embellishments, such as cute ribbons or buttons to give it an extra special touch:)  I created these two matching shirts for my boys to kick off football season in a few weeks!

I did a "BIG BRO" shirt for my son a couple of years ago, but have yet to make anything else. I've got my fingers crossed I can knock out a couple of onesies for our baby girl before she makes her debut next month!

What a great idea, and definitely do-able. I love the idea of a football, or maybe a maple leaf for fall.

I love the football applique! Using ric-rak was so creative. Did you heat'n'bond that also, or just sew it down?
