Easy Christmas Gifts Kids Can Make

December 7, 2016

For young children, so much of the holiday season is about what gifts they’re asking for and how many days until Santa arrives. It’s important to find ways to teach them about giving. For little kids, I like helping them make gifts to give. Then, the gift is something they can take pride in giving. Today we are sharing 6 easy Christmas gifts kids can make.

Easy Christmas Gifts Kids Can Make

Even when my girls were really little (1-3) we’d make a simple handprint or footprint craft to give to family at the holidays. Now that the girls are 5 and 6, they like coming up with their own craft ideas and even wrapping the gifts they make. Last week we worked on a number of fun, easy crafts with Alex’s craft club for the children to use as gifts. The kids had a lot of fun and I enjoyed hearing them discuss amongst themselves who they want to give each gift to.

Whether you need a project to make with a class of children or gifts to make with your own children, below are 6 easy gifts to make. I ordered almost all of the supplies for these gifts from Oriental Trading. Their prices are great especially if you are trying to make quite a few of each gift. There are tons of craft kits you can order ready to go. Also, if you have a craft of your own in mind, Oriental Trading has a lot of great craft supplies too. I noticed that is you’re ever looking for a deal on Oriental Trading, you can check out their coupon page.

1. Finger Print Pot Holders

To make these, start out with blank canvas potholders. Then use a Sharpie marker to draw the black string across the potholder on a diagonal. Add small black squares where you’d like the children to make their fingerprints. The little squares will look like the top of each bulb and also help the children know where to place their painted fingers. Then put out a plate of red, green, yellow, blue and orange craft paint. Have the children dip their fingers in the various colors and then place them onto the potholder. I love how these came out and have the one Alex made out in my kitchen as holiday decor!

2. Pom Pom Ornaments

To make these ornaments, I got a set of DIY Clear Round Christmas Ornaments and different size small pom poms. I took off the top of the ornaments and gave the kids an ornament and a bowl of pom poms. They got to work filling them and then I added the tops back on. They came out so pretty!

3. Teddy Bears

This was a really easy craft but the kids loved making them. I got a pack of multicolor teddy bears from Oriental Trading. Then I put out string and beads and had the children “design” a bear by making it a special necklace. These make cute gifts for siblings, cousins, etc.

4. Snow Globes

These snow globes make great gifts and are much easier to make than I expected. We started out with plastic DIY Snow Globe Jars. We got a bag of fake snow and small holiday themed miniatures from the craft store. The kids glued little snowmen and Christmas tress to the black lid of the jar. Once dry, we added about 2 pinches of fake snow into the globe and then put the top on and flipped it over.

5. Magic Color Scratch Christmas Tree Ornaments

These are so easy and scratch off art is always a hit with kids. We chose the Christmas Tree Ornaments but there are many other styles to choose from like snowflakes and snowmen. If your child has a bunch of people to make gifts for, these are great because even though it’s a pack of the same project, each one will come out unique as they scratch off their designs.

6. Make Your Own Tie

Here’s a great gift to made Dad, Grandpa, uncles, etc. Oriental Trading has Color Your Own Fuzzy Ugly Christmas Ties. The kids had a blast making these and all couldn’t wait to see their dad or grandpa wearing them!

Oriental Trading also has a lot of cute Christmas ribbon, twine and bags that kids can use to “wrap” their own gifts after they make them. Letting kids make and present gifts to people at the holidays is a special way to help the season be more about giving. Letting them use their own talents to make gifts they are proud of, makes it even more special!
