The Chirping Moms

Maternity Style for the Holiday Season

December 16, 2015

This is the 2nd time that I’ve been very pregnant for the holidays. It’s a time of the year when there are lots of gatherings, parties and reasons to get dressed up. It’s also a time when you might want to dress festive or get something new. When you’re wearing maternity clothes, you don’t always want to buy something for a specific occasion knowing the following year or even just a few months later, you won’t be wearing it anymore. This time around, with the holidays approaching, I found a few items would be nice for the holidays but also good “maternity staples”. I also found some special items and then a few items that would be perfect for right after baby but double as maternity clothes. The holidays are such a joyful time, and even more joyful when you have a new baby in your belly joining you at all the festivities. My maternity picks for the holiday season:

Winter Staples

When I was pregnant with Tommy, I got my favorite maternity items from Seraphine Maternity. They became my “summer staples”. This pregnancy I knew I needed more fall/winter clothes, so I went back to Seraphine. The items I have gotten were perfect for fall and also for wearing to holiday events. They have great items for “dressing up or dressing down” so they make great maternity staples. My favorites are:

Seraphine’s black maternity jeans, cable knit cape and their printed crepe maternity blouse

Maternity Holiday Dresses

Seraphine Maternity also has the best maternity dress selection I’ve found. They have a wide range of styles and prices. There are so many options from Seraphine for holiday parties, work parties and New Year’s Eve.

A few great options:

Claret Red Knot Dress, the black lace cocktail dress and this navy evening gown

Great Deals

For the best deals on great holiday maternity clothes, I love Loft and Gap. Their coupon codes are great this time of year and include maternity. What I really like about Loft maternity is that they have some of the great shirts and sweaters available in regular sizes in maternity. Therefore they don’t look so “maternity” and more like tops I would normally wear.

Shoes & Accessories

One way to dress up around the holidays without buying new maternity clothes, is to make the maternity clothes you already have more festive with shoes and accessories. Then at least you can use them after the pregnancy. My number one choice for shoes when pregnant are Tieks. They are so comfortable and look nice. They have some great colors for the holidays (even red and green!) or a classic black or navy to match all of your holiday outfits. For the past 2 pregnancies I don’t think I’ve worn any shoes but Tieks, they are just so comfy for my tired pregnant feet. For accessories, I like Anthropologie. They have unique items that can really dress up some of the plain black and gray maternity shirts and sweaters I have.

Non-Maternity Clothes

Another option is to find great shirts and sweaters for the holidays that will work while pregnant and to wear post-partum. If you’re having a baby right after the holidays (like I will) you may be wanting big comfy sweaters for most of the winter. I’ve found a few Boden sweaters that I love: the Cashmere Hoodie and the Slouchy Cashmere Poncho. These two styles fit with my big pregnant belly but they are not maternity. I am looking forward to wearing them after the baby arrives, when they’ll be a little longer and still so soft and comfortable.
