Baby Steps to “Going A Little More Green”!

April 16, 2013

Yesterday, we kicked off our “Going a little more Green” week with a really AMAZING giveaway, Our Giant Earth Conscious Giveaway.    One of the shops that we wanted to highlight today, as part of our For the Moms Tuesdays, is Anne Riggs Designs and I am going to share some of favorite “Pinterest” DIY cleaners below as well!
I, like Courtney, am trying to take small steps to make our house a little more “green”.  With three little ones under my feet all day, I have tried to implement some small ideas that we can do our household.  Most of them are simple things…turn off the lights when we leave the room, unplug the appliances when we aren’t using them, using the same sippy cup for water all day long, etc.  I would love to hear some more SIMPLE ideas on how our readers find ways to make their kids and themselves more eco-conscious.
As a mom to three little kids and two dogs, I feel like we go through paper towels like crazy!  Need to clean little hands…grab a paper towel!  Need to wipe up a juice spill…grab a paper towel!  Need to wipe doggy paw prints off floor…grab a paper towel!  Now, I have found what every mom needs…
earth day Anne Riggs Designs creates one of my favorite new products in my house right now…REUSABLE paper towels!!!!!!!   Each roll comes with 12 reusable paper towels that snap together easily.  You just grab one towel, use it for what need it for, and then throw it in the washing machine.  How AWESOME is that?!?!

I love the look of the paper towels in our kitchen.  It hangs beautifully from our paper towel holder.   The towels are made of two layers—one side of the the towel is the pretty printed side, while the other side is made up of an absorbent terry cloth layer.  All of the towels are completely washable and dryable!  Not only am I helping the environment by reducing the amount of paper towels that I use, but what a great way to save money by reusing the same set of paper towels!

eco-friendly Last fall, an easy switch that we did in our house was from paper to cloth napkins.  Growing up, I learned to always set the table properly with a napkin for each place setting and habitually do it every dinner both for the kids and adults.  I have to admit that the boys’ napkins often get used once with barely a trace of food on it and go in the trash.  I decided to switch to cloth napkins because they are reusable, easy to wash, and still teach them good manners!  I haven’t bought a pack of paper napkins for family dinners since last fall and am so happy to make such a simple eco-friendly switch!
going green cloth napkin One of my favorite set of cloth napkins comes from Anne Riggs Designs.    Anne, the owner of Anne Riggs Designs, has a FABULOUS idea that she started with cloth napkins called “Family Napkins.”  Here is the idea quote from Anne herself, “You want matching napkins for when you have dinner guests, but for everyday family use, it makes more sense for everyone to have their own distinct napkin, so you can get several uses out of them between washings. So I am creating family napkins, pick a different fabric for each member of the family, high quality designer fabrics, including kid-friendly prints!”  What a great idea and my kids love their fun printed napkins and trust me, there are many days that I can just put their napkins right back in the cabinet because they did not use them once!

One last product that I wanted to feature from Anne Riggs Designs are the reusable baby wipes!  With another baby in the house, these are perfect to use not only for wipes, but to help clean up spit up, use for a soft washcloth at bath time, and also to keep in the diaper bag to help clean spills and hands on the go.

Anne Riggs Designs creates many earth-friendly products that replace items that are typically used once and thrown away.  Using high quality designer cottons, Anne’s products include reusable “paper” towels, reusable baby wipes, reusable breast/nursing pads, reusable make-up/facial pads, reusable family napkins and clothespin bags as well as clothing for children. Her products are for sale at several stores in Maine and on Etsy.  Anne is offering free shipping on all reusable products and clothespin bags for the month of April. The coupon code is: EARTHDAY2013.
Another way that we have discovered to become more “green” in our households is by using DIY “eco-friendly” cleaners.  We wanted to share some of our favorite pins with you below and would love for you to share some of your “green” cleaning tips with us, by sharing your “pin” with us to “pin” to our boards or sharing some other great tips with us!  We are hoping to learn from our readers as much as you learn from us this week.  Make sure to follow our “Earth Conscious” board to see some more of of our pins that will hopefully help us become a little more green in our house!

Many thanks for this great article about my products, Julie, and thank you to all your readers who are as excited as I am about using reusable products. I smiled at all the comments I read about yesterday's posting. Just think…if each household replaced one disposable product with a reusable one, what a difference that would make!
