Snow Day Essentials for Families

January 30, 2024

Whether you’re planning a winter vacation or for a snow storm at home, being well-prepared is key to a safe and enjoyable day for the whole family. I’m sharing some essential items and tips to make your snow days a memorable and stress-free. Oh, and some fun snow items too! Save this list for getting snow ready:

Snow Day Essentials

  1. Warm and Waterproof Clothing: The cornerstone of any successful winter adventure is proper clothing. Make sure that each family member has insulated, waterproof jackets and pants. Layering is crucial for regulating body temperature, so pack thermal underwear, fleece, and waterproof outer layers. Don’t forget waterproof gloves, hats, and insulated boots to keep everyone warm and dry during snowy activities.
  2. Quality Snow Gear: Equip your family with the right gear for snow play. Sleds, snow tubes, and toboggans can turn any snowy hill into a thrilling ride for children and adults alike. Consider investing in durable snowshoes for exploring snowy trails and a good pair of waterproof goggles to protect eyes from wind and snow. This year I tried Northern Classics for the 3 boys and love it. It’s also great for more neutral items to pass on from kid to kid.
  3. Hot Beverages and Snacks: Staying warm from the inside out is crucial in cold weather. Pack a thermos with hot cocoa, tea, or soup to keep everyone cozy during breaks. High-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, and dried fruits are convenient and provide a quick boost of warmth and sustenance during outdoor activities. If you’ll be home for the snow day, keep soup ingredients on hand or try making homemade hot chocolate.
  4. Snow Essentials for Your House: If you live in an area that gets snow, stock up in advance so you’re not running out right before a storm. Having good snow shovels and salt is key. Another great item is a Snow Shield Mailbox Guard which is is ready to stand tall all winter long to protect your mailbox from extreme weather conditions.
  5. They are very durable and built to withstand the force of wet, heavy snow being thrown by snowplows. For inside, I love a Boot Bench for a good spot to keep all the wet boots.
  6. Winter Sports Equipment: If your family enjoys winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, make sure everyone has the appropriate gear. Rent or purchase skis, snowboards, boots, and helmets that fit well and meet safety standards. Consider taking lessons together if some family members are new to these activities, ensuring a fun and safe experience on the slopes. For enjoying the snow at home, make sure to have sleds and snow tubes. A few of our snow day favorites: Favorite Sleds & Snow Toys.
  7. Winter Vehicle Preparation: If your winter adventure involves driving to snowy destinations, ensure your vehicle is prepared for the conditions. Install snow tires, check the antifreeze levels, and carry tire chains for added traction. Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials like blankets, a shovel, and extra winter clothing.
  8. Hydration: Despite the cold temperatures, staying hydrated is essential. Cold air can be dehydrating, and physical activity in the snow increases the need for fluids. Pack insulated water bottles and encourage regular hydration breaks, even if you don’t feel thirsty. This is most important when traveling to higher altitudes for a snowy vacation.
  9. Family-Friendly Winter Games: To keep the entire family entertained stock up on some some games for both inside and outside. Indoors: have playing cards and board games. For outside: try some good old snowman buidling, having a snowball fight, or creating snow sculptures.

With the right preparation and essential items, a snowy family adventure or a snow day at home can be full of fun memories. From warm clothing to safety gear and entertaining activities, each element plays a  role in ensuring a fun winter experience. So, gather your loved ones, embrace the snowy wonderland, and create lasting memories that will warm your hearts long after the snow has melted away.
