2 Great Apps For Kids That Will Keep Them Moving

February 13, 2014

Does it look like this out your door today?

It’s starting to feel like at least once a week, we are stuck inside because of a snow storm. We are running out of things to do. We’ve made about 1,000 Valentines this month & have baked enough cupcakes to feed the neighborhood. So, today’s fun is thanks to the iPad. I am usually not quick to pull out the iPad on a snowy day, because the kids have no interest in sitting still & I prefer something to keep them at least a little active. But our iPad fun today is all about fun & keeping the kids moving. We use a lot of the Sesame Street Digital apps. The girls love their interactive books & as a mom, I know the learning apps are created by a company that’s been teaching children since I was little. The two we’d like to share today are Sesame Street Family Play & Big Bird’s Words.

Sesame Street Family has hours of family fun packed into one app. It’s all about getting the family together to play games. You start out by selecting where you are in the house. Then, you select how many kids are playing. The character will then ask you if you have certain items in the room. For example, when we wanted to play a game in the girls’ bedroom, we were asked if we had socks to play with. Next you’ll get a series of instructions on how to play. For the bedroom sock game, we had to line up, count to five & then throw the balled up socks in the air & catch them. The game went on to practice counting, etc.

We spent a lot of time this morning playing games in the living room. We played a game that involved masking tape & not falling off Oscar’s bridge (or you’d get tickled).

Abby Cadabby’s magic game was a hit! We all took turns being the magician or the people “guessing”!

The biggest hit was The Quietest Monster. We ended up playing this game for almost an hour. I won’t give away all the fun details, but will say they loved it because it was like a new version of hide and go seek & I loved it because even though they were being active, they were super quiet!

There are over 150 fun activities in the Family Play app. This would also be a great app for travel. Often, if were are in a hotel room, without our toys, we run out of fun things to play. You could also use it with a bigger group of kids, like at family holiday parties. The games we’ve played have been simple enough for Alex (2.5) but would certainly entertain kids much older too.

The other app we’ve been playing is Big Bird’s Words

This is a wonderful app for teaching kids to recognize words, especially if they are kids that don’t like to sit still! Big Bird has created a “word-o-scope” that keeps you on the hunt for words around the house. For example, we started out by listening to clues from Big Bird to help us find all the items on the grocery list.
Next we had to use the “word-o-scope” to find something on our list. We had to find the word “milk”. The girls ran to the fridge. They knew where to find the milk, but then I had to help Maggie figure out which word on the carton was “milk”.
We sounded it out, she figured out it started with M. As soon as she held the camera or “word-o-scope” over the word “milk” Big Bird congratulated her. This is a great app for helping kids have fun with words.

Before we went on to practice more words, the girls had to have a glass of milk. I felt like I was in the book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie! Along with Family Play & Big Bird’s Words, Sesame Street has many more apps & digital books for children to enjoy. You can find them in the App Store or click here for the complete list. Have some fun today & stay warm!

We were not compensated for this post. We were able to download some of the Sesame Street apps at no charge, for the purpose of review. As always, all opinions are my own.
