5 Ideas for DIY Valentine Clothes & Accessories

January 20, 2015

It’s fun to have some cute Valentine’s clothes and accessories for babies and kids. Since Valentine’s Day attire includes red, pink and hearts, they are always a hit in my house. My girls would dress for Valentine’s Day each day of the year if they could. This year (like last year), I ordered some fun, inexpensive fabric appliqués from Once Upon A Design (see end of post for a special deal). Then, we went to work creating our Valentine’s Day outfits. It was a lot of fun this year, because the girls liked picking out what appliqués would go where and said they were “designing” their clothes. The little purse was all Maggie’s idea!

Valentine’s Day Sibling Shirts

One of my favorite pictures of Maggie and Alex is from the Valentine’s Day they wore their “LO” and “VE” shirts. I wanted to come up with a set of shirts for my new trio! I got an “I”, a heart and a “U” from Once Upon A Design and ironed them onto shirts we had.

Valentine Dresses

I used pink cotton dresses I had gotten from Diapers.com (for about $10 with coupon). They are the City Threads brand and super soft.

Valentine’s Day Onesie

This is the first Valentine’s Day shirt I’ve made for a boy! It’s a Target onesie + a fabric tie appliqué.

Mini Valentine Purse

Maggie and Alex each made their own Valentine bag. They also made one for their friend. I let them pick out which appliqués they liked and I ironed them on. Last the girls picked out ribbon and I tied bows and glued them onto the bags. I found a pack of 5 mini totes on Amazon. I thought these little bags would be perfect for storing some of their favorite Valentine cards!

Heart Shaped Valentine Hair Clip

Here’s an easy way to make your own Valentine hair accessory:

Supplies: alligator clip or barrette, pink ribbon, hot glue and scissors.

Directions: Cover the clip with ribbon (optional). You can also but alligator clips at the craft store that are already covered in ribbon or leave the clip plain. To make the heart, cut a piece of ribbon that’s about 8inches. Cut a second piece of ribbon that is about 1 to 2 inches. Fold the longer piece of ribbon in half. Wrap the smaller piece of ribbon around the fold and glue (you are using the smaller piece to keep the larger piece in half). Now use the two pieces of ribbon to form a heart. Glue to hold in a heart form. Last, glue the ribbon heart onto the clip.

All of the fabric appliqués used in the post are from the Etsy shop, Once Upon A Design. I’ve been buying appliqués from this shop for about 5 years now, and I’ve always been so impressed with what I receive.  Right now, Once Upon A Design is offering FREE shipping for our readers. Just send her a message saying your from The Chirping Moms and she’ll ship for free. What’s great with the appliqués, is you can use a shirt or dress you already have and make a fun holiday shirt for about $3!
