An Easy Summer Room Refresh

June 30, 2015

My kids spend a lot of time playing in their room when they’re stuck indoors. From about November to March, we spend a lot of time indoors. Except for an afternoon here and there playing in the snow, there’s not a lot to do outside in the freezing cold. Our days inside include playing in the (teeny) playroom, coloring in the dinning room and playing in the girls’ room. I’m thankful they have a shared bedroom they love, with space to play. After a winter of playing, their room was looking a little rough. They are not aloud to bring food, drinks or markers to their room, so I am not sure how their rug looked so bad, but it did. I think kids just permanently have grimy hands. When spring came and I was changing over clothes, I realized their room needed a little “refresh”. I got to work, and realized a little bit could go a long way in their fun space. It looks a lot better and very “refreshed” after the long winter.

Here’s what we did:

1. Closet clean out: This year, when I took out all of their winter clothes and started putting the spring clothes in, I kept a Thred Up bag nearby. Anything that they hadn’t worn much over the winter or things I knew wouldn’t fit next year, were placed in the bag. Same went for the spring clothes I was unpacking. It was a great way to not have such a cluttered closet and a great way to make some money.

2. Book clean out: we had piles of books everywhere. The girls love reading, but the piles were getting overwhelming. We chose a bunch of books they no longer read to donate to the library. We kept only what would fit on their bookshelf.

3. New throw pillows: What better way to “refresh” a room for summer than throw pillows shaped like rainbows and watermelons. These fun pillows are from The Land of Nod. They have so many adorable throw pillows. Just adding these 2 pillows gave their beds a quick, easy summer refresh.

4. New rug: Like I mentioned above, after a long winter of playing (plus an additional 2 years) they really needed a new rug. Adding this adorable new rug from The Land of Nod totally made their room come together. It was an easy, fast way to refresh a room! The girls said the rug looks like ocean waves, which is certainly a summery feel!

Their room feels refreshed, cleaner and bright! We’re ready for summer and sleepy nights after long days in the yard.
