Avocado Toast with Pecorino Cheese

September 15, 2018

I love the food in Italy. Honestly, even after 30 days of eating meals in Italy both at restaurants and cooking, I didn’t get sick of the food. The restaurants are wonderful and more family friendly (in my opinion). I enjoyed cooking meals there too. Grocery stores are small and friendly. There are tiny markets with amazing produce. And… the groceries are SO much cheaper, which definitely added to my cooking enjoyment!

Here’s the one thing I missed during my first few weeks of Italian life: avocado toast. I’m not a big breakfast person, then a few years ago I discovered avocado toast. Since then I eat breakfast more and love finding new things to add to the toast. I was really missing my favorite breakfast… then we discovered that there was an amazing coffee shop on our street in Florence that also served avocado toast and PANCAKES (what the kid were missing). So now we could enjoy all the Italian food with an occasional stop at this place for our American breakfast favorites.

The cafe had options to add things on to your avocado toast that I hadn’t tried before: one morning I added tomatoes (super delicious Italian tomatoes) and one morning scrambled eggs & poppy seeds. My cousin got their avocado toast with sliced pecorino cheese and it looked wonderful. I had to try it. She started making it when we got back home to the US and sent me a photo…. I drove to Whole Foods, bought the cheese and made it for myself too. Since then it’s a new favorite!

Avocado Toast with Pecorino Cheese

All you need:

  1. Bread
  2. avocado
  3. pecorino cheese.
  4. Optional: You can season with some pepper if you’d like!
  5. Optional: tomato

Also, a cheese fyi… pecorino cheese is just a cheese made from sheep’s milk. There is a wide range of pecorino cheese, some much harder, some softer. I’ve tried a few now and personally think all are delicious on avocado toast!
