DIY I Love You Magnets: Craft + Book + Snack

January 14, 2016

We’ve started a new series on the blog called Craft + Book + Snack.  So many of the kids crafts I come up with are inspired by books we read or things my kids are most interested in. Then, along with reading and crafting, they get even more excited if we have a snack or dessert that has a “theme”. I also thought it would be helpful for activities in preschool or for birthday parties. Of course the crafts can be done on their own. Think of the books and snacks as a fun bonus!

This week’s Craft + Book + Snack is geared towards slightly older kids (Kindergarten to 3rd grade). Of course it can be done with younger kids too, but we wanted to have something special to do with your “bigger” kids this Valentine’s Day. If you haven’t read It’s Valentine’s Day before, it’s a book of 14 silly and sweet poems for Valentine’s Day. They are fun to read aloud. The craft is pretty silly too with the google eye! This craft could also be made on a larger canvas, on paper or even as a card. We made it as a magnet to use as a decoration or even as a sweet, silly Valentine’s Day gift for someone! This snack can also be made (with assistance) by kids 5+. Enjoy!

Craft: DIY I Love You Magnets

Supplies:

Mini canvas (2in square)

Stick on magnet

Pink Paint

Google eyes

Glue

Letter stickers or Sharpie

Glitter heart stickers or glitter paper and heart hole punch

Directions:

Have the child paint the canvas pink. Once dry glue on the google eye, glitter heart and stick on a letter U sticker (or write a “U” with Sharpie). Last add the stick on magnet to the back.

Book: It’s Valentine’s Day (I Can Read)

It’s Valentine’s Day is a really fun book (only $3.99 on Amazon)! There are fourteen silly, sweet poems by nationally bestselling author Jack Prelutsky

Snack: Heart Shaped Brownies

This is a fun one to let kids help with. All you have to do is make a 9X13 pan of brownies. Let the children use cookie cutters to make the brownies into hearts. These make a great Valentine’s Day party treat!
