DIY Snowman Cake for a Winter Birthday

January 10, 2013

You know the holiday craziness between Thanksgiving and Christmas—filled with crafting, shopping, special holiday events, family gatherings, etc, etc, etc.  During this time, we are also blessed to celebrate not one, but TWO, big birthdays in this house!!!!  Andrew turned two shortly after Thanksgiving and Aiden turned four shortly before Christmas!  Yes, two birthdays in three weeks in this BUSY time!!!
We spend the actual birthdays celebrating as a family of four (And a special visit from Grandpa who was here for Aiden’s birthday in his pre-Christmas visit)!  We have never done the big birthday thing in our house, partly because we have no family nearby, partly due to the fact that it is the busiest time of the year for everyone we know, and partly because our house is limited on space!
But this year was the first year that the boys got to have a little “friends” party!  We invited two of our favorite families over for a fun night of eating, playing, eating, playing, and more eating!!!! It was a pretty low-key night with football on in the background, kids destroying the house, and overall just a fun evening with friends.
For appetizers, we had…
  • Chips and Dip
  • Apples with Brown Sugar Dip
  • Cream Cheese Pinwheels
For the adults, we had chili!  While the kids feasted on mini pizzas created on biscuit dough!
My favorite creation was the boys’ birthday cake!  I combined a few ideas I found on Pinterest to create this special “Frosty” snowman cake for the boys!!!!  I baked one 8 inch cake and one 9 inch cake and added buttercream icing!  For the buttons, I used Kraft holiday marshmallows.  For the scarf, I used a Fruit By the Foot.  For the arms, I used pretzel rods.  For the mouth, I used a Sour Punch straw.  For the nose, I used an orange slice.  And the eyes are Hershey Kisses.  And I sprinkled a little “glittery sprinkles” on it to get it a little glisten!
I have to say that I LOVED seeing the joy on my boys’ faces for their simple and sweet birthday gathering!!!
