Fall Sports Tips For Little Kids

August 21, 2014

Back to school also means “back to sports” for many children. In our case, this fall is the first time we’ll be starting some fall sports along with school. Maggie has decided she wants to play soccer and both girls will be taking ballet class. So, while we are getting our school gear lined up, we’ve also had to get some sports gear too. As a parent, the world of sports and after school activities is brand new. I did plenty of activities as a child, but this is the first time I am the one making sure the little athletes are prepared, stay safe and are having fun. I’ve been browsing the web for good deals on clothes, shoes and equipment for little ones starting sports. I’ve also been trying to find the best ways to share good tips on staying healthy and safe as well as being a good sport. As we head into our first fall of sports, we are excited and ready to play!

After some research, here are my tips for starting fall sports for little kids:

Safety

After reading a lot about little kids and sports safety, these are the three tips I saw over and over again:

The Gear

These are some great deals I’ve found shopping for fall sports items online:

Sneakers // Water Bottle // Soccer Ball // Shorts // Shin Guards // Ballet Shoes // Leotard // Tights //

Soccer Bag // Ballet Bag

Details on sneakers!

I’ve always worn New Balance sneakers. I’ve tried a number of other types over the years, but always go back to New Balance. When it was time for Maggie to get her first real “sports” shoes, I went with what I trust for myself: New Balance. They make their kids sneakers with the same high quality as the adult versions. Julie chose the Fresh Foam 980’s for Aiden and Maggie will be sporting the 890’s. They are rainbow, so my little girl who typically refuses to wear anything but glitter Mary Jane’s, is excited for her first running shoes!

Sportsmanship:

I was pretty lost on teaching the meaning of good sportsmanship to a 4 year old. We talk a lot about being kind to others, but wanted to explain it in the context of starting a sport like soccer. So, I turned to books! These are some cute books for kids about sportsmanship:
