The Chirping Moms

For the Moms Tuesday: Birthdays

August 7, 2012

When I was growing up, birthdays were always a big deal. It
was our OWN day of the year. My brothers & I all had birthdays within a few
weeks of each other but they never got blended together in any way. Our
birthday was always all about us. I’m glad my parents treated our birthdays the
way they did, because when I look back I can really, very clearly, remember at
least something from every year (back to my 6th birthday).
Since I have such fond memories of all of my birthdays, I
decided while planning my 1st daughter’s 1st birthday, I would continue
the tradition of VERY special birthdays. If you have celebrated with my
children you know I go ALL OUT. From the minute they wake up, I do my very best
to make it as memorable as possible. They funny part is, so far I have planned
a 1st & 2nd birthday for Maggie & I am in the
midst of planning a 1st birthday for Alex. Most likely neither of my
little ladies will remember a thing about the parties, but I am starting the
tradition from the very start.
This year, as my own birthday approached, I decided
something: I would still make sure my OWN birthday was something to remember. I
decided as I plan my kids’ birthdays & husband’s birthday each year, I will
make sure I do at least one thing for myself that I would not do any old day.
This year was extra special because I flew to Chicago. I lived in Chicago for 5
years before heading back east & it’s where some of my very best friends
are. It was the first time I traveled alone in years & it was great! Don’t
get me wrong, I enjoy (almost) every single moment with my darling family, but
the weekend away was a refreshing fun birthday treat. The weekend included
dinners, drinks, shopping, manicures, pedicures & plenty of wine and ALL
adult conversation with some of my favorite people. I’m sure every year I won’t
be able to do such an extensive birthday celebration for myself, but amidst the
planning for everyone else’s special day, I will make sure to remember my day
too.
Late afternoon, on my birthday, I flew home to the two
cutest faces on earth. They were peaking out the front door with birthday
cards. Happy Birthday to me!

Good for you! Mommies need to take time to take care of themselves too so we can take care of our own! 🙂 Sounds like a great birthday! 😀

I love the idea of planning something special for your own birthday. Too bad we, as moms, don't do it more often (why do we wait for a birthday to treat ourselves?).
