Where to Wednesday: A Backyard Party

August 8, 2012

As I’ve mentioned before, our back yard is one of my favorite things about our house. I am so excited that we will be hosting Alex’s 1st birthday party in our yard. It’s the first party we are having out there!

I have been trying to think of some fun ideas for decorations & activities for a backyard birthday party. You can find some of these ideas & more on our Birthday Party Board on Pinterest.

Pinata

One thing ย I think every backyard birthday party needs is a Pinata. I was so excited to find someone on Etsy that sells handmade pinatas! Pleasantly Pinatas has a wonderful assortment of fun pinatas. The shop owner, Marci, is a mother of 3 & started making pinatas after she made one for her daughters 5th birthday & it was a hit amongst the guests. Pleasantly Pinatas is sure to be a hit at Alex’s 1st birthday with this awesome pink whale! I can’t wait to fill & hang it for the big day.

Be sure to “like” the shop on facebook for updates on fun new designs. Our readers receive 5% off with the code AUGUST.

Month by Month Pictures

I want to have a picture of Alex, month by month along our fence for decor. I have seen a few fun ideas on Pinterest for 1st birthday ideas. One thing I wish I did were pictures with those adorable onesie “month” stickers. They are just so cute. By the time I remembered to do them with Alex she was already 9 months.

I thought of a fun idea for moms who forgot to use the stickers OR moms who remember them to reuse their stickers: stick them on a picture of the baby from that month for party decor. I received these adorable whale onesie stickers from Buddha Bellies. Be sure to browse their shop – they have some great designs!

I will be sure to take pictures of all of the final product when they are all hanging for the party. I have pink & green ribbon to use to hang them along the fence.

I am still trying to think of more outdoor decor & activities for the party. Please comment & help me out!

We were not compensated for this post, however we did receive an items for review.

cute!! i'm guessing you're doing a "whale" theme?
you could always have beach/whale themed activities….
*if you have a sand table (or even just some empty shallow tubs) you could have a sand castle building station.
*also, if you have a kiddie pool you could have a "deep sea fishing" activity where the kids go fishing.
    *sand art
    *crab walk relay races
*we've also made "Starfish" by gluing cheerios onto a starfish cut out.
*decorate sunglasses/frisbees/sand pails (they're all pretty cheap right now!)
*sprinklers and water balloons are always a hit, too! ๐Ÿ™‚

We had my daughter's 1st birthday at our house too b/c we got rained out of the park. We actually had most of the children's activities in the garage since it was wet. But we had fun riding toys, hula-hoops, and bubble – every kid loves bubbles! But Amy's ideas above are awesome!!!

Loving it. I'm 35.5 months pregnant with my first – is it too early to start pinning ideas for his first birthday party??

I am in the middle of planning an outdoor/backyard 1st birthday for my little guy! I am doing the monthly progress banner as well! I also did a pennant "happy birthday" banner for him and i'm going to hang paper lanterns in the tree in our backyard in lieu of balloons!

I thought about doing a pinata for him, but since he can't bang on it yet, I thought it may not work out so well.

We have a pool, so the kids are going to play in the pool, but I have some "crab" crafts I found on pinterest that we are having the kids do. There is a website called "first palette" that I found a free coloring sheet printout of a crab, I'm sure there is a whale one somewhere online you could print off and have the kids color sheets. You could even feature some of them!!!

This idea is perfect for summer, either backyard pool party or beach party. The whale pinata is very creative. For sure kids will enjoy it.
