The Chirping Moms

DIY Valentine Chair Backer

January 18, 2013

Hosting Valentine’s Week on The Chirping Moms has inspired me to pull out my Valentine decorations this week and get decorating.  I found one of my favorite projects from last year that I just love, so I’m sharing it with you today…

I just LOVE the Pottery Barn Mailbox backers for chairs, but this crafting mommy wanted to try to create her own version, DIY style!  So I decided to whip up something using some supplies that you could find at any old craft store.  Directions posted below:

DIY Valentine Chair Backer
Supplies Needed:
  • Red Felt Pieces
  • Wooden Hearts
  • Buttons or Other Decorative Accessories
  • Ribbon
  • Paint (if you would like to paint the heart)
1.  To make the envelope, I cut two pieces of felt.  One is 8 x 11. (This was the part of the smaller piece of the envelope, where the button hearts are glued on)  The other piece=the same size rectangle (8×11) AND the folding part of the envelope (when you cut out this piece, it will look similar to a house).
2.  Zig zag stitch the two pieces together along the sides and bottom of the envelope.  (If you don’t have a sewing machine, I’m sure you could use hot glue as long as you don’t plan on sticking anything in them that is super heavy!)
3.  Punch holes along the edge of envelope flap about every 1 1/2 inches.  Then, thread a piece of ribbon in and out of the holes.
4.  Add wooden heart that was painted with child’s name in the middle of the envelope flap.
5.  Add other accessories (button hearts).
6.  Punch two holes on back of envelope where you can string a piece of ribbon through that will tie to the chair.
And voila, your adorable and homemade Valentine chair backer that your kid will LOVE!

So cute! Gah! Why didn't I attempt to make these myself? I ordered one for each kid for Miles's 1st birthday party as favors. $$$$$ These turned out great!

Oh my goodness, these are darling! And they really don't look that hard to do, either (I'm not very crafty). Maybe my mom can help me out 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing at Thrifty Thursday!

What a great alternative to the Valentine's Day Mail box. This is like V-Day's answer to Christmas stockings…and you can use these year after year. Brilliant! I'm so glad you shared this at Loving Valentines Day!
