Fun Summer Craft for Kids: Friendship Pins

June 17, 2020

Summer has come upon us again and this time we’re making this fun summer art craft project ideal for kids of all ages. If you’re contemplating on some charming summer activities that your kids will love, then this summer themed friendship pin is for you!

Kids love art projects that they can make use of while also having lots of gratification in making it. What’s a better way to partner up with ice cream on the side than a DIY friendship pin for summer?

My girl’s latest favorite craft is friendship pins. Who remembers these from the 80’s & 90’s? We’re bringing them back! All the commendation goes to a friend of mine who evoked my memory of my favorite summer craft when I was Maggie & Alex’s age.

My girls have been making them for friends, they make them for their shoes, their clothes, etc. This summer themed craft is super fun for kids who are searching for craft ideas to do in their spare time.

A few weeks ago my friend and I were conversing about good craft ideas for kids to help enthrall and amuse our 8-10 year olds during quarantine. She asked if I remembered making friendship pins.

Did I?!? They were my favorite kids’ crafts growing up. I used to love adding them to my sneakers. This is immediately a perfect project for kids!

I then went on Amazon to order craft supplies. I ordered this kit and it actually came with even more than I realized: all of these pretty colored beads, plus 2 different types of letter beads, string etc. Then I ordered this set of gold pins.

How do you make friendship pins?

It’s super simple! Just add beads to a pin in different colors and designs. My girls also love to write out words and also add their friends’ names or initials. These pins are fun to trade with friends at home or at summer camp, add to your backpack or beach bag, add to your sneakers or just wear it alone!

How do you wear friendship pins?

The easy way is just to bead them and give them to friends. If you want to wear them with the beaded side correctly showing, you do have to actually “untwist” the safety pin.

If you do this, I suggest a parent help with this part. You can do it really easily if you have needle nose pliers but I have also just done it by hand. You are basically opening up the little “circle” on the safety pin so you can put the beads on the opposite side.

Then you just twist it back.

Multi Pin Friendship Pins

Another fun thing to do is make multi pin friendship pins. My girls like to make rainbows and we recently made an American Flag this way.

You make a bunch of pins and then slide them all onto 1 pin so they “hang”. This is also a fun way to collect and share your friendship pins. You can collect pins from all your pals and keep them all together on one big pin.

Turn your friendship pins into a bracelet

This was my favorite thing to do with all of the beaded pins when I was a kid. I loved how “cool” they looked turned into a bracelet. For this, just make a bunch of the pins and then string them on 2 pieces of elastic.

Right now on Instagram, we have teamed up with a few friends to share different creative activities for kids this summer.

You can find out more by clicking here. We are also giving away a $250 Pink Chicken gift card in the post. All of the cute outfits in this post are from Pink Chicken.
