Happy National Pancake Day! (Pancake Ideas and Activities for Kids)

March 4, 2014

Pancakes are a staple in our house.  We eat them for breakfast.  We eat them for lunch.  And we eat them for dinner.  If Daddy is working late, pancakes and bacon are an easy fix for this busy mom.  There are always pancakes in the freezer and my four year old even knows how to get them out himself, place them in the microwave, and make breakfast all on his own.  Pancakes are kind of a big deal around here, so when you have a day like National Pancake Day, I think that it needs some celebrating.

In honor of National Pancake Day, I wanted to share some an awesome new pancake recipe that I had stirring in my head.  The problem is that when I tried to create my “imagination” pancake, it flopped.  Like a total fail.  So I can’t share it with you as it was just a major cooking failure, even the dogs wouldn’t eat it and you know that’s bad because they eat about anything that they can get their mouth on including Lego pieces.

So instead, I’m sharing some of my favorite pancake things with you all today.

First of all, you know I’m a huge children’s book fan so I made a fun list for you all with some of the kids’ books ALL ABOUT PANCAKES:

Pancake Children's Books : The Chirping Moms

Pancakes, Pancakes! : Tyler Makes Pancakes! : Pancakes for Breakfast : Marsupial Sue Presents “The Runaway Pancake” :  If You Give a Pig a Pancake : Curious George Makes Pancakes : Pancake Pandemonium : The Pancake That Ran Away

I’m all about pairing literature with children’s activities (I think it must be the former teacher in me).  So this past week, we attempted to create our own little pig pancakes after reading If You Give a Pig a Pancake.  Now let’s just say attempted… (First, I have to admit that they are totally not homemade pancakes, but as homemade as this house gets, thanks to Bisquick!).  And our pigs are definitely some interesting looking pigs and I think that my five year old (pancake in bottom right) has outdone his mom (pancake in top right) in pancake artistry.

After creating our pancake masterpieces and stuffing our faces with these beauties, it was time to burn off some of that energy.  Let me introduce you to a new game, Pancake Pile-Up, from Educational Insights.  This game is so adorably cute and we have been playing it every morning this week.  It’s a relay game where kids race to stack and serve a pile of pancakes that match the order card.  It’s super easy to play and simple to understand.  All you do is place the plates across the room.  Place the pancakes in the stove (the box) and look at an order card.  The boys carry the pancakes across the room using mini spatulas to create the specific orders (similiar to carrying an egg on a spoon in relay race).
Whoever completes the order first yells “Order Up!”.  Pancake Pile-Up is great for little ones as it is super easy to play and doesn’t take a long time (as we all understand that a preschooler’s mind changes about every 2.2 seconds!).  Another great thing about this game is that it can be played individually (my five year old just likes to create orders by himself) or with up to as many as 12 players, when you play it relay style.  Pancake Pile-Up would be a great game to have at a playdate or in a school environment for little ones.  Courtney & her girls have been loving this new game too!
And last, after my failed attempt of creating a new pancake idea for you all, I scoured Pinterest for some of the cutest pancake ideas that one could find.

And here are my top 5 pins to share with you…
