How To Make A Cute Addition to an Essential Baby Registry Gift

July 20, 2015

It’s always a lot of fun picking out baby gifts. When heading to a baby shower, it’s tempting to get the most adorable little outfit you can find and skip the baby shower registry, but we all know Moms need a lot more than cute clothes. With 3 babies of my own, I always look at the registry and think of which items I couldn’t live without and grab those for the mom-to-be. It’s a bonus if  I can get something I know will make her life easier. Then I like to add something cute to go along with it. If I have time, it’s even more fun to make something special to compliment the registry gift. One of the easiest things to make are custom burp cloths. They are inexpensive to make, they can be made girly, with lots of blue or gender neutral and they are so easy. This set took me less than 10 minutes to make, and you can even make them without a sewing machine if you don’t have one.

Here’s how:

DIY Cute Baby Burp Cloths

Supplies: plain white cloth diapers, ribbon, straight pins. If you are going to sew: thread & sewing machine. For no-sew: Heat’n Bond Iron-On Adhesive Hem & an iron

Directions: Start by washing the cloth diapers. They shrink up a bit, so if you don’t pre-wash and then add the ribbon they might not look so great after the first washing. It’s also necessary to pre-wash if you are using the iron on adhesive. Next, measure and cut the ribbon to the length of the burp cloth. Use straight pins to hold it in place/in a straight line. Next, if you are using a sewing machine, simply sew in a straight line, right down the center of the ribbon. Repeat for the second line of ribbon and your done! If you are going to use the iron-on adhesive, measure 2 pieces of the adhesive the length of the ribbon. Follow the instructions on the adhesive you bought to iron the ribbon to the burp cloth. You are basically just going to place the adhesive in between the ribbon and the burp cloth and then iron.

Then, you’re all set! I like making 3 that coordinate and tying them together. If you’re feeling inspired to make more baby gifts, we have a fun tutorial on making your own bibs here.

Now for the essential baby registry gifts. Like I said, I try to find something that I know a mom will use and will hopefully make her life easier. A great example of a registry gift that makes life easier for moms: The Diaper Genie. No, they are not super cute like the adorable clothes you might find, but diapers stink and Diaper Genie is a super easy way to dispose of them.

A Diaper Genie is an essential for a new mom. It’s a great baby shower gift. Now, how do you make a can to throw dirty diapers in cute? Make some burp cloths using the tutorial above!

The Diaper Genie is so easy to use.  They also make for an easy way to let older siblings help out. My girls think it’s cool to toss the wet or stinky diapers into the Diaper Genie. For our Diaper Genie and when we buy it as a gift, we shop at Target. They have great starter sets as well as refills.

Diaper Genie now has a neat new program called “Mommy Time” Rewards Program. If you have a Diaper Genie you can sign up at any time. Be sure to take advantage of the Diaper Genie “Mommy Time” Rewards Program! Earn points to use towards great rewards for yourself every time you buy or register for  Diaper Genie products.  Here’s how it works:

1. Buy Diaper Genie products

2. Take a photo of your receipt using your  phone or upload a photo of your receipt or baby registry from your desktop and create a Mommy Time Rewards profile at www.MommyTimeRewards.com

3. Log in to your Mommy Time Rewards account and redeem your points for eGift Card rewards.  The rewards are great – you can earn gift cards to places like Sephora and Zappos.

So now your set to find an essential registry gift, compliment it with something you can make and then help mom earn gift cards to treat herself. I think any mom or mom-to-be would enjoy all three!
