Both of our families have made it through Hurricane Sandy safe and sound, thankfully. The storm started as a rainy and slightly windy Monday, but once the evening kicked in the storm took full effect. Courtney had already evacuated the town to her parents’, while my husband and I decided to hold down the fort at home. What a night it was—the winds were whipping like all craziness, transformers popped all night long, and the only vehicles that you could see on the street were fire trucks and police cars zooming down to help people.
It doesn’t help to watch the news—it only makes you more anxious for things to come. Around bedtime, my family decided to set up camp in the living room with our one air mattress. As soon as I got camp set up, the power went out completely and we were on our own. Somehow, despite the winds and rains, we managed to sneak a few hours of sleep in (or at least the kids did) before waking up to the calm after the storm.
Realizing that power could be days away, my husband I and packed up the kids’ by early afternoon and took a planned trip to see each of my parents a few days early. Both of our houses have survived the storm, but our town is still recovering with MASSIVE tree falls and downed power lines (thankfully no flooding) everywhere. We are devastated to what the hurricane has done to our state, NYC, and so much of the East Coast. I have lived in the NYC tri-state area for several years now and it has really been thrown into ruins. Schools are closed for at leas this week, our power is estimated to come back on November 5th, and there are so many area that are a complete disaster zone. Our thoughts and prayers are with so many as people are just starting to pick up the pieces and take the steps to recovery.
