DIY Madeline Costume
Madeline has always been one of my favorite books. I was so excited to read it to my girls for the first time when they were tiny. Since then, we’ve read them non stop over the years and last year made a special visit to Bemelman’s Bar in New York City for the Madeline Tea. This Halloween, Alex chose to be Madeline. I was thrilled to take on creating a DIY Madeline costume because I knew it would be easy, comfy for her to wear and a darling outfit! Since Alex really wanted me to be “part of her costume”…. I will be going as Miss Clavel.

Easy DIY Madeline Costume

Supplies/ How To:

Blue Dress: We used the Peasant Top from Primary.com and ordered a size up. I thought it looked the most like a Madeline dress (the fabric actually feels like the coat the doll wears – says Alex), Primary also has a ton of other blue dress options too – long sleeve and short sleeve, depending on how warm it is where you live

What Collared Shirt: We used the Peter Pan Polo from Primary.com

Black Shoes: We used these from Babychelle.com

White Knee Socks & White Gloves: We used socks from Primary.com and these gloves from Amazon

Yellow Straw Hat: We bought this straw hat on Amazon. It was perfect because it was the right shape and came with a black ribbon on it. You can really use any straw hat though. Then I bought yellow spray paint (also on Amazon) and sprayed the hat yellow!

Red Ribbon: The one pictured is this size/ width. You could do it smaller and tie a bow, but I liked the folded look/ Alex didn’t want a bow.

Optional: Genevieve the dog – we have one in a little bag that I got one Amazon or bonus points for dressing up a baby brother or sister as a little brown dog!

For Miss Clavel, I just ordered a nun costume (under $10!) on Amazon.

“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines
Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines
In two straight lines they broke their bread
And brushed their teeth and went to bed.
They left the house at half past nine
In two straight lines in rain or shine-
The smallest one was Madeline.”
― Ludwig Bemelmans, Madeline

Happy Halloween!
