Memorial Day Weekend kicks off in 1 week! We are getting very excited for summer to start. With Memorial Day, Flag Day and then 4th of July, it’s fun to have some patriotic activities, clothes and recipes for the kids. Today we’re sharing 10 ways to get patriotic with kids along with some ideas for patriotic clothes from one of our favorite stores.
Happy Red, White & Blue!
10 Patriotic Ideas For Kids:
1. USA Clothes Pin Banner
Supplies: Clothespins, pipe cleaner, red paint or marker, white card stock or paper, blue marker, star stickers
Directions: Paint the clothespins red. Cut out 3 white cards and have your child make a U, S, A on them. Decorate with star stickers and hang using the pipe cleaner.
2. Patriotic Mini Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
These are always a hit with kids! For recipe, visit this post.
3. Paper Straw Necklaces
I tend to buy way too many paper straws for every holiday & party. I think they look festive, but are never all used. At this point, I have a giant bag of random colors. So, I pulled out some that were red, white & blue. I cut them up into pieces about 1 inch long. Then, the girls used yard to string their paper beads. Now they have some patriotic accessories! Tip: put tape at the end of the yarn for easier stringing of the paper beads.
4. Patriotic Handprint
Directions: Paint your child’s hand with red, white & blue paint, to resemble a flag. If you have any extra star stickers, you can add some stars on the flag too.
5. Make A Paper Flag
Supplies: White card stock or paper, wood dowel or stick, glue, red & blue markers
Directions: For younger kids, use a pencil to draw the shape of the flag on the paper for easier coloring. Let the child color the flag. Leave about 2 inches blank, use this part to fold over the wood dowel and glue. This will make a fun flag to wave!
6. Book About America
America: A Patriotic Primer. This book is a fun introduction to the great history of our country!
7. USA Yard Decor
Supplies: Blue foam circle, letter stickers, red & white pom poms, star stickers, glue and a wood dowel or stick.
Directions: Have your child decorate the foam circle. We used this as a letter recognition exercise. I had the girls look through the stickers and each find U, S and A. Then use glue to stick on pom poms. Add some star stickers. Last, glue the wood dowel to the back of the foam sheet. When it’s dry, stick in the dirt or grass!
8. A Patriotic Parfait
Ingredients: yogurt, blue berries, strawberries and crushed graham crackers.
9. Painted Popsicle Stick Yard Flags
Supplies: 5 popsicle sticks, glue, index card or cardboard to glue sticks onto, wood dowel or stick, blue glitter, red & white paint
Directions: Glue the 5 sticks onto the indue card/ cardboard. Paint 3 sticks red and 2 sticks white. While the paint is wet, sprinkle on the blue glitter. When the flag is dry, glue the wood dowel to the back. Use to decorate the yard!
10. Patriotic Paper Wreathes
Supplies: paper plate, red or blue paint, ribbon and star stickers
Directions: Cut out the center of the paper plate (adult should do that part). Now you have a wreath shape. Paint the wreath. Once dry, stick on star stickers. Punch a hole at the top and use ribbon to put through the hole & hang!

And now we are sharing some of our favorite finds for our “Red, White, & Blue” picks for Kids!
All of these “festive” clothes can be found at Gymboree. We have featured our love for Gymboree in the past and it still remains one of my go-to shops to pick up the kids some new clothes as well as a great place to pick up some adorable finds for baby shower gifts! Gymboree clothes are always cute & fun, but also are well-made and can be passed down to younger siblings. And they have some great accessories to choose from as well!
I haven’t had a chance to pick up any festive red, white, & blue yet for the summer, but I was over at the mall this weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the awesome deals that I found at Gymboree for this summer. First, I snatched up this fun top for Abby (and the matching hair clip!). I actually bought it in a size two and magically pinned up the back so it will last us two seasons of wear. How adorable and perfect for summer is this little top? One reason that I love their clothes is that they are comfortable and soft for everyday play, but often can be used for “dressier” occasions!
One of my favorite Gymboree finds for my boys are the sleeveless tank tops. My boys started wearing these when they were around 18 months and I love them so much that we now own several of them in every size. They are cool & comfortable, perfect for the hot summer days. I love the bright colors and I stocked up on several of these while at Gymboree this weekend. Right now, they are marked down to $6.99 which is a great price that you honestly can’t beat!
Below are some of my other favorite summer finds that can be found right now at Gymboree! Right now, Gymboree is holding their “Everything is $14.99 and Under” sale which I find is the perfect time to stock up on outerwear, shoes, pajamas, and those “fancier” clothes for kids that you must have. Most of the items for sale at Gymboree right now have already been marked down which is perfect because you can stock up now and wear all summer!
Now that all the bright and fun clothes are filling our closet, it’s time to get out and play. Here’s to the start of a joyful & happy summer!
