Spicy Crispy Drumsticks

September 18, 2023

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Looking for a fun new easy weeknight meal that will spice things up? My whole crew loves these spicy crispy drumsticks for dinner. They also like chicken wings for dinner but I realized I could make full size drumsticks to fill them up and still make them spicy and crispy. The family likes different levels of spicy, so I made some with El Yucateco Ghost Habanero Hot Sauce and some with Habanero & Grilled Pineapple. Recipes below for both versions.

Spicy Crispy Drumsticks

Extra Spicy Crispy Drumsticks

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 pounds chicken drumsticks
  • 1/4 cup of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup of El Yucateco Ghost Pepper and Habanero Hot Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of butter

Directions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Pat the drumsticks dry with a paper towel. Put the baking powder, salt and pepper into a large ziplock bag. Add the drumsticks. Shake the bag to make sure the drumsticks are fully coated. Take them out of the bag and place in a baking dish. Cook them for 40-45 minutes (check that they are cooked through). Take them out of the oven. Make the sauce: Melt the butter in the microwave. Add the hot sauce and whisk together. Brush the sauce over the drumsticks. Make sure they are completely coated and then place them back in the oven for 10 more minutes. Enjoy!

*Note: the Ghost Pepper Sauce is extremely spicy! I did not serve these to the kids.

Sweet and Spicy Crispy Drumsticks

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 pounds chicken drumsticks
  • 1/4 cup of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup of El Yucateco Grilled Pineapple and Habanero Hot Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 cup of diced pineapple (either fresh or canned)

Serve with diced pineapple. Enjoy!

For both versions, start with a pack of drumsticks. Make sure to pat them dry with a paper towel. The only coating I used is some baking powder, salt and pepper. Since you add the sauce at the end, it’s easy to make a big patch and add the “spice temperature” at the end. Once the drumsticks are cooked through, I add the sauce and then return to the over for about 10 more minutes to make them extra crispy.

Not in the mood to use the oven? These can be made in the air fryer too! For drumsticks in the airfryer, cook them at 400 for 30 minutes. I do 15 minutes and then turn them over and do another 15 minutes. Same as the recipe for the baked drumsticks, add the sauce on at the end, when they are cooked.

If you prefer to make wings and smaller drumsticks, the recipes work for that too! Either way, these two hot sauces will be a huge hit with the family or guests. These are great to serve with traditional wing sides: we did celery, carrot chips, ranch and some of the extra sauce.

A bit about the sauces in the recipe. I love using El Yucateco hot sauce. El Yucateco is the the #1 habanero sauce in the United States and all of the sauces are made from the whole fruit of the pepper, they are non-vinegar based. The company has been making hot sauce since 1968. I have been using the original recipe for years and was excited to try the new flavors.

There are six new El Yucateco hot sauce flavors but the two I tried and used in these recipes are the hottest and the most mild. The Ghost Pepper & Habanero being the hottest and the Pineapple & Habanero being the most mild. I figured that was a good way to please those that love extra spice and those that like a more mild spice (the kids!). Both have a ton of delicious flavor. The two new sauces I used in these recipes:

  • El Yucateco Ghost Pepper and Habanero Hot Sauce:  They took their hot sauce up a notch but adding ghost pepper. The flavor is delicious and the heat is extra hot!
  • El Yucateco Grilled Pineapple and Habanero Hot Sauce: This one truly balances the sweet with the spicy. It’s a unique blend and and gives a vibrant touch of tropical flavor.
