The Chirping Moms

To Alex on Your 1st Birthday

September 7, 2012

 Dear Alex,
Today you are 1! This year has gone by way too fast, but I
am certain I smiled more this year than any other in my life. Watching you grow
along side your big sister has been better than anything in the world. On your
birthday, I want to share your “birth day”, & how your came into this
world.
We moved into our new house just 2 weeks before your due
date. I was in a mad dash to unpack every single box before you came. I wanted
you to come home to a lovely home. We had no air conditioning & as I
unpacked a box Maggie was throwing things back into another box. I tell you
this, because I have no idea how I didn’t go into labor then.
A week before your due date hurricane Irene hit. We were
evacuated from our new house (right as I finished the unpacking!). All over the
news they were talking about the air pressure of hurricanes sending women into
labor & all the roads to the hospital were closed. I was so nervous, but
you stayed put.
Your due date came & went. A few days past your started
moving like a mad person (I still had no idea you were a girl). It lasted for
hours. You were kicking & moving non stop for over 5 hours – so much that I
couldn’t even sit down. I got nervous. I had Daddy take me to the hospital. You
were perfectly fine. I was hooked up to a bunch of machines to track heart beat
& movement. The nurses couldn’t believe how active you were! They all said
I was probably having an active son. They sent me home. Now that I think of
that night, I think all that movement was your warm up for a super fast entry
into the world.
I finally went into labor 7 days after your due date. It was
6:30am & Daddy & Maggie were fast asleep. It started the same as it did
with Maggie, so I just figured I was in for the long haul (Maggie was born 28
hours after I went into labor). So I told Daddy he should probably work at home
& let Grammy know at some point in the day to come get Maggie before we
went to the hospital. I decided to take
&shower & pack before Maggie got up. Then all of a sudden
something changed & the labor was much different then I had with Maggie. I
knew whatever was going on must have happened long after the epidural last
time. I could barely get out of the shower. I told Daddy to get up & we had
to leave for the hospital NOW. We woke Maggie & had to take her a long  too. I remember being in traffic on the
way, thinking you might be born in our VW & Maggie yelling from the
backseat begging me to sing Baby Beluga.
We got to the hospital, Daddy & Maggie had to park so an
old man RAN me in a wheel chair up to Labor & Delivery. As the man pushed
me through the doors, the nurses too one look at me, ran me into a room,
stripped me down & started getting me all set to go. A nurse told me later
on, that she has seen enough pregnant women to know by the look on their face
how close they are to delivering. I could hear Daddy & Maggie in the
hallway. The nurses told Daddy that as soon as I was ready to push they would
take care of Maggie so he could come in, but minutes later I heard Grammy &
Grandpa run down the hall, scoop Maggie up & Daddy was in the room. Then 5
minutes & 1 push later you were in my arms. I remember looking at the clock
when I got to the hospital & it was a little after 8am. You were born at 9:00am on the
dot.
We could not believe you were a girl! You were the sweetest
little thing in the world. You were calm, with gentle eyes from the first
minute in the world. You seemed so tiny compared the the toddler we had at home
& we started calling you our little Pipsqueak. Then, the tiny sounds you
made sounded more like squeaks than crying so it went down to Squeaks. We still
call you this every day. Maggie calls you “keeks”.
Sweet Alex, from the very start, you have made Daddy & I
so happy. As a newborn, every morning when Daddy left for work, I would bring
you in bed & we would snuggle until Maggie woke up. I was proud of you when
you learned to roll over, but sad you could now roll off the bed. You have
remained my snuggle bug. As soon as I pick you up, any time of day or night,
you lay your head on my shoulder. It warms my heart every time. From the very
start, your big sister has made you smile. She has a real tough time sharing
with you, but you don’t mind. You just like to stick by her side. Last week you
2 sat in those giant side by side seat Target carts. You seemed a little
nervous, but then started to enjoy the ride. I looked down & you two were
holding hands. Maggie will always be your protector.

You smile & laugh all day. You love Jersey: your first
word was “J” & your second “puppy”. You are becoming quite a silly kid & you sure know when you are being funny. You have just started to walk & you are so proud of yourself each time you
make it a few steps on your own. We love you to the moon & back. Happy
birthday to the sweetest girl around.
