The Chirping Moms

Where to Wednesday: Woodstock, Vermont

February 24, 2016

I’ve always wanted to visit Woodstock, Vermont and it’s on our list of places to try as a family. I am so glad we have Jenn, from Biscuits in the Oven, on the blog today sharing their trip.

After enjoying today’s guest post, be sure to follow along with Jenn:

As the leaves are being gathered in preparation for the cold weather to arrive in New England, we decided to take a long weekend up to Vermont to celebrate my Dad’s 62nd Birthday. We love to take trips as a whole family. My husband and I love to travel and driving places is sometimes much easier for a long weekend away.

Where to stay:
Woodstock, Vermont was a destination we had in mind due to central location.  It isn’t too far to get to and offers all the charm you’re looking for in a cozy, Vermont town.
On this trip we stayed at a wonderful Inn located in the center of town, The Woodstock Inn.  We knew the resort was extremely welcoming to children and families, which is a must with us these days (i.e. kid friendly hotel restaurants, a big green to run around, and walkable to town).  Between my sister and I, we have three children, all three years old and under.  When we travel, it’s always about finding a balance between activities and amenities the adults want to have and the comfort and ease of having the children enjoy themselves as well.
If you’re looking to have an entire house (for a whole family traveling together) then look no further than Birch Hill Farm.  You have the option to rent one of their beautiful properties on a working farm!  This is where we plan to stay for our next visit to Woodstock.
Where to eat:
The Red Rooster at The Woodstock Inn is a very kid friendly spot with delicious food. We ate breakfast and dinner there (and even did a take out lunch one day).  The kids has plenty of fun options to choose from and the adult food was equally as delicious.  *Stop by the not-so-secret game room after dinner for some vintage arcade games, shuffleboard, life-size Scrabble, and let the kids run around while the adults can enjoy a cocktail or beer!
Worthy Kitchen is a craft beer and farm to table diner.  It’s wonderfully kid friendly with an awesome menu.  The wings, doughnuts and sides are a must try!
Woodstock Farmer’s Market is the best little grocery store you will find in Woodstock.  If you’re staying in a place with a kitchen, you’ll want to stop in here to get all the delicious goodies to cook a supreme meal.  OR-just stop in for their egg sandwiches and doughnuts in the early morning before you hit the slopes.  They carry brands like Jeni’s Ice Cream, Jasper Hill Cheese and even eggs from local farms.  We stopped there at least once a day for snacks and coffees.
Activities:
Ski at Suicide Six
When the snow starts falling, the perfect slope for the little ones is Suicide Six.  It’s minutes from downtown Woodstock and provides the perfect ski experience for the little ones learning how to ski while still having a few larger runs for the adults.  It’s close enough that you can sneak in a few runs pre- or post naps.
Norman William’s Public Library (Kidspace)
When the weather is just a bit too cold, stop into the public library in town to check out the perfect kid space on the lower level.  The kids floor has plenty of activities for the little ones while staying nice and warm.  Check the schedule to see when they have their events and story times.
Billings Farm and Museum
If you’re looking for an authentic dairy farm, look no further.  Billings Farm houses some of the most prized dairy cows and you can get up close and personal with them. Whether you’re peeking in on the new calfs (quite possibly born only a few days prior) or taking a wagon ride out to the pasture to look at the cows grazing, you won’t be disappointed.  Make sure to try their cheese, it’s delicious!
Take a brewery tour (and eat) at Harpoon Brewery located in Artisans Park:  You can bring the kids along while you tour the brewery and then sit and eat lunch at their beer garden style eatery.  The kids loved the hummus platter and their homemade pretzels with dipping sauces were delicious. After lunch, stop by next door at the Sustainable Farmer for homemade ice cream.
If that’s not enough, jump in the car and get lost on the dirt roads just south of Woodstock. The windy roads will surely put the kids to sleep, which will give you just enough time to take in the beauty of Vermont’s rolling hills and scenic countryside in some peace and quiet.
Love, Jenn
