A New Mother’s Day Tradition

May 8, 2015

Julie and I have been talking a lot about Mother’s Day. We’ve talked about things we’d like, taking the day off, what the kids have been making in school, etc. We’ve also been talking about trying to start Mother’s Day traditions with our kids. We decided it would be fun to plant flowers each year for Mother’s Day. It’s easy and doesn’t have to be ON Mother’s Day, just some time in early May. Where we live, it’s the perfect time of year to start planting flowers and now that the kids are getting older, it’s something they can help with.

Maggie and Alex were so excited when I told them about getting to plant a Mother’s Day garden. They helped pick out the flowers, dug the holes and filled in the dirt. The project was a lot messier and the garden is a lot less “planned out” than in past years, but it’s also a lot more special.

Maggie has always loved the gardens my mom plants each year. My mom’s “green thumb” is a lot greener than mine, and she has a knack for creating truly beautiful gardens. She also adds fun stones, ornaments and bird fountains. Maggie and Alex love seeing what Grammy adds each year. They wanted to add something like that to our garden, so we took a look at Personal Creations. They have a really neat garden collection. The girls chose butterflies for the garden. They wanted 1 big butterfly and then little ones with their names. They chose pink for their names and a yellow and green butterfly for Tommy. After they were done planting all the new flowers, they couldn’t wait to pick the perfect spot for each butterfly. Our afternoon gardening was a lot of fun, and something I’ll remember doing with Maggie and Alex. Next year Tommy will be running around and ready to help us plant too! I’m excited to have a new tradition to continue each Mother’s Day.

Julie and her crew will be moving soon, she wanted to start the tradition of planting a garden for Mother’s Day too. She had a fantastic idea – plant flowers with the kids that they can move with them to their new house. Not only was is something special they could do together for Mother’s Day, but it will be something special they can take with them from their current home to their new home. Julie also found something from Personal Creations. She chose a personalized galvanized planter tub that says “Rogers Family”.

We are both so happy with our new flowers and our new Mother’s Day tradition. What Mother’s Day traditions do you have?
