A Room For Sisters: Creating A Shared Space For Maggie & Alex

May 19, 2014

One of the first steps in preparing our house for becoming a family of five, is Alex moving into Maggie’s room. We actually started creating this shared room a while ago. When Maggie got her first real bed, we got Alex one too, knowing someday they would share a room. When I was ordering the furniture and trying to figure out the best way to utilize the space, I got a lot of help from a design pro at The Land of Nod. I didn’t think it was going to be possible to fit 2 beds and 2 dressers in the room. The Land of Nod designer was able to show me a great room layout, without ever stepping foot in the room! The room fits all of their things and they still have a ton of room to play.

Alex will be 3 in September and is just now showing signs of wanting out of her crib (very different from Maggie jumping out of the crib at 20 months!). I decided it was time to finally put the finishing touches on the room and get it all set to become a special room for these sisters!

Rug // Bed // Sheets // Book Caddy // Dressers // Dolls // Prints // Bedding // Garland // Pillow

I wanted the room to be bright and cheery. I also wanted it to be a spot that my doll and princess loving ladies wanted to call their own. I really love how it  all came together. The girls are so excited to start sharing a room!

I love The Land of Nod furniture, rug and bedding we bought. The quality of everything is wonderful. The sheets and duvet covers have been washed countless times and the colors are still vibrant. The beds have been a hit with the girls. They think they are great for jumping and couldn’t be happier that they are pink. I haven’t decided on curtains just yet (we still need our black out shades for 6:30pm bedtimes). For now, I used felt garland from The Land of Nod. It looks cute on it’s own or you could add over plain curtains. They have so many bright garlands, like pinwheels and pennant flags.

Two of my favorite “organizers” in the room are their bookshelf and hair bow holders. We have so many books and love to read. I didn’t think we’d be able to fit a bookshelf in the room with all of the other furniture. Then a few months after ordering their bedroom furniture, The Land of Nod came out with bright colored book caddies. The aqua caddy was the perfect color accent for the room and holds a ton of books. The girls also use the shelf below the books to set up their princesses and trinkets. For the bow holders, I found cute fabric bird hooks. I used one to hang headbands (and our growing tiara collection) and on the other hook, I tied a piece of ribbon to clip bows on.

Even though it’s a shared space, I tried to have a few things in the room that are “their own”. I love their Cleo & Poppy dolls. They say their names on the leg and I picked dolls that reminded me of each of them. Besides their personalized dolls, they each have a picture over their bed with their name on it.

We ordered a lot of the items in the room from The Land of Nod. I found some accent pieces at Home Goods and found the big wood “Cute as a Bunny” plaque at a local shop. While trying to put the “finishing touches” on the room I found 2 brands that were new to me: Dandy Star and Uh Oh Pasghettio. Dandy Star is a British brand that offers fun, hip clothes and housewares. The girls love rainbows and shooting stars, so I knew they’d like this pillow. Maggie likes to switch the pillow all the time to see the stars “shoot up or shoot down”. There was one big, open wall left in the room and I wasn’t sure how to fill it. The team at Uh Oh Pasgettio came to the rescue. Uh Oh Pasghettio creates colorful prints for stylish kiddos. I told them colors in the room and that I wanted something “big” to fill the wall. They came up with this:

They actually customized 2 of the prints I liked, to fit the room (the 2 on either side of the map). They made the wording of the quotes plural to make them work for a shared room. I thought it was a great idea. We’re so happy with how the girls’ room came out. It’s proving to be a great shared space for sisters!

[…] The room is officially Maggie’s (although Alex resides up there most of the time too!). They’ve been sharing a room forever so as much as they were excited for their own rooms, they still spend most of their time together. It seems like a lifetime ago I shared their first shared room. […]
