DIY Dolphin Trainer Costume

Last year Maggie wanted to be a dolphin for Halloween. While I (sort of ) came up with some ideas to create a dolphin costume, she decided she wanted to be a dolphin trainer instead. We had recently been lucky enough to spend a day with a real dolphin trainer. Maggie decided that’s what she wanted to be when she grew up and what she wanted to be for Halloween. A dolphin trainer seemed to be a much easier costume for me to make, except Maggie had one request for the costume: a dolphin that was jumping through a hoop….

My DIY skills went to work putting together a dolphin trainer outfit. To my surprise, my husband had some DIY Halloween skills I didn’t know about. He came up with a way for her favorite stuffed dolphin to jump through a hoop during the Halloween parade.

Here’s how it all came together:

  • Child size wetsuit
  • Patent leather hightops
  • Tin pail filled with fish (Maggie made the fish out of paper)
  • Whistle
  • A stuffed dolphin
  • Hula hoop

I bought all of the costume supplies on Amazon. To make the dolphin look like it was jumping through the hoop, my husband drilled holes in the hula hoop and using fishing line (pulled very tight) suspended the dolphin in the hoop. It was attached in 4 places to hold it in place and make it look like it was going through the hoop.

The costume was a big hit at the school Halloween parade. Maggie was so excited to look like a real dolphin trainer and even more excited that her favorite stuffed dolphin was along for the parade doing a “real trick”.
