Easy Earth Day Activity: Coffee Filter Planet Earth

April 12, 2021

Earth Day is next week and I’ve been trying to come up with a few easy activities for the kids to do as part of their distance learning at home. Today each of the kids made a coffee filter planet Earth. It was super easy and they had a lot of fun with it. It’s also a good one for right now since we can’t get out to the store for supplies – all you need for this are coffee filters, markers and water.

When I was a kid, we used to do a craft kind of like this with my mom. We loved how they’d turn out. Since the world needs extra love right now, we added the little paper hearts in the center of the planet Earth. Here’s how to make a coffee filter planet Earth:

Supplies:

  1. Coffee filters
  2. Blue and green markers
  3. Spray bottle (with water)
  4. Red paper (optional)

Directions:

Color the coffee filter with the blue and green markers. Scribble is fine!

Next spray the coffee filter with water using the spray bottle. The marker will bleed off the filter, so you will want paper towels or an old towel under it. Another idea is to do the craft outside so the mess doesn’t matter. Let the coffee filter dry completely to see your “planet Earth”. Last, cut out a small heart from the red paper and tape/glue it in the middle.
