Red, White & Blue Flag Sensory Bin Activities

May 23, 2022

Sensory play is a perfect way to add to your toddler’s play activities. It helps to stimulate their senses and fine motor skill in a fun and easy way for them.

Little kids learn best when they’re able to touch and feel objects in their hands. This red white & blue flag sensory bin activity for preschoolers is ideal for your children to learn in significant ways.

To give homage to the patriotic holidays, I decided to make a patriotic sensory bin that resembles the colors of the American flag. This sensory bin is a perfect way to incorporate into your young kids’ preschool activities or play!

Red, White & Blue Flag Sensory Bin

What you’ll need:

  1. Farfalle pasta
  2. Penne pasta (or similar shape)
  3. Red and blue food coloring
  4. Rubbing alcohol
  5. Gallon zip lock bags
  6. Rectangle bin
  7. White stars (or make some out of paper)

How to dye the pasta:

Dying dry pasta is quick and easy. Just dump the dry pasta into a zip lock, add 1 tablespoon per half box of pasta, and a few drops of food coloring. Add more food coloring to make the color darker.

Just don’t add too much food coloring or it might dye the kid’s hands when they play. Once you add the alcohol and food coloring to the zip lock, zip it tight and shake until all of the pasta has changed color. Dump it out on a tray to dry.

For this: take the farfalle and dye it blue in one zip lock. Take the penne and add half of it to another zip lock to dye it red. The remaining penne will be the “white” for your flag.

Once all of your pasta is dry, dyed, and ready to go, you can add it to the rectangle bin. Use the red and white penne for the stripes, and the blue farfalle for the stars – top with the little white stars.

Let the kids play! It’s fun to swish around and play and then have them try and re-make the flag or sort the colors out. You can even place small pom poms inside for the full patriotic vibe!
