Have you ever tried salt painting? It’s really fun and the final product is so pretty. This is something you can do with younger kids (with assistance) and it’s also a great art activity for older kids. It’s a form of process art, which is something you can have your big kids read up on before the project. I also feel like this counts as science too… so you’re really doing a lot with one fun arts and crafts project! You can make any design with salt art but I was looking to make a new St. Patrick’s craft with my kids and thought salt paint shamrocks would be really pretty and festive.

Salt Paint Shamrocks

To make salt paint shamrocks here’s what you’ll need:

Supplies

  1. Liquid Water Colors (I got this set on Amazon years ago and still use it). You can also use food coloring + water if you don’t have liquid water colors.
  2. Salt
  3. White Glue
  4. Paintbrush
  5. Cardstock or a paper hard enough to hold the weight of the glue + salt. These would also be cool on canvas
  6. Shamrock Shape (optional)

Directions:

Start by tracing the shamrock on the paper (or a few shamrocks!).

Use a pencil or very light color to trace. Next trace the shamrock outline you just made with glue.

Next sprinkle salt all over the shamrocks. Make sure you really get a lot of salt on the paper! Shake off any access salt.

Next use your paintbrush and the liquid watercolor to paint the salted shamrock outline. Take your time and paint slowly and with just a little bit of water color at at time. Let your St. Patrick’s Day masterpiece dry!
