Second Opinions & Invisalign

October 1, 2013

This is a sponsored post by Invisalign. As always, all thoughts & opinions are my own.

I never had braces. As a kid, my doctor said I didn’t need them. My teeth are straight, but I have some pretty big spaces. It never bothered me much, but now that I am getting older (hit the big 3 – 0), I’ve started to think that for gum health, it might benefit me to get Invisalign. I also was always told that my wisdom teeth would help push my teeth together, and that never happened. If you are not familiar with Invisalign, it’s a series of, nearly invisible, removable, “aligners”  that are used to straighten your teeth. Both teens and adults can use Invisalign. I am planning on talking to my dentist next month, at my visit, to see if closing the gaps in my teeth, could ultimately help my teeth/gum health as I age.

Then, last week I was approached to write about Invisalign and their Second Opinion Sweepstakes. This month, the company is really tying to drive home the importance of getting a second opinion when  it comes to oral heath (and healthcare in general). As I read through some of the findings, from a recent survey Invisalign conducted, I was really surprised at how few Americans get second opinions when it comes to their health.

In a recent poll, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Invisalign, Less than a quarter of survey respondents said they would get a second opinion for teeth straightening and less than 10 percent for routine oral procedures such as root canal. Yet many of these oral procedures meet the criteria for meriting a second opinion; they are invasive, costly and have long-term impact if not handled properly.

Then they got me thinking about second opinions and how important they are in all aspects of life. I’m one of those people who tends to think with their heart and not always their brain. Luckily, I married someone who is the opposite. We have bought two houses together. Both times I looked at the yard & envisioned kids playing tag, while he looked at the foundation & termite damage. When were buying our house in New Jersey, we found and bid on a house we both loved. We were outbid & then before raising our bid, we looked a little closer into the financial details and saw a little something about flood insurance. The house and taxes were going to be enough to handle, and now this. The insurance wasn’t that high. The owner said they hadn’t gone up in years. BUT my husband decided to get a second opinion from a different insurance company. The quote they gave was more than triple what the owner was paying (she had lived there about 100 years and was locked into a great rate). So, my husband said “it’s too expensive & we’re not moving to a house that requires thousands a year in flood insurance” and I cried because I was 7 months pregnant and now moving hundreds of miles to a place where we hadn’t found a home.

We ended up finding another house; one we both loved even more. The crazy thing about the 2nd opinion really helping us out: 2 weeks after we closed on our house Hurricane Irene hit (oh and I had told my husband “it’s in a flood zone but WHEN does NJ ever have hurricanes”). The house I cried about “losing” was under water and I was days away from giving birth. Always get a second opinion!

In addition to thinking their survey findings were interesting, I wanted to write about Invisalign to share a few reasons I would consider it. I think it’s great that teens and adults now have a more modern way to straighten their teeth. There are also no food restrictions and you can maintain your normal brushing routine. You are getting your teeth straightened without most people even knowing you are in treatment. For more information, you can visit the Invisalign website.

Be sure to stop by and enter the Invisalign Second Opinion Sweepstakes and Instant Win! In order the help bring awareness to the importance of second opinions, Invisalign is giving away $50 a day in instant win prizes (through Oct 15th)  and a $1,000 grand prize. You can enter daily.

Any good second opinion stories to share?

I had Invisalign and even did a series on YouTube – about my experience. I had traditional braces when I was in my 30s and then didn't wear my retainer – so I decided to give Invisalign a try – they did the job – but this time I have a permanent retainer on the bottom.
