Summer Reading Bingo Challenge for Kids (Free Printables)

May 28, 2024

Summer Reading Bingo Challenge Fun

With summer here, I needed something to inspire & motivate my little reader (and readers to be)!  I created these fun Summer Reading BINGO charts to use with my own kids.

Today, I am excited to share these printable BINGO cards with you.  Here’s how the Summer Reading BINGO challenge works:

1.  Set a reading time goal for each individual child.
2.  Decide on one or several prizes.  These could be a special trip for ice cream, a new toy, a trip to the water park, or really anything.  Just make sure the prizes are something that the kids really want to earn.
3.  Start reading, reading, & reading.  As they read, the child gets to cross off the chart.
4.  Then comes the prizes.  You could give a small prize for getting BINGO (5 across or 5 down) & a really awesome prize for finishing the whole chart and getting blackout, it’s really whatever you decide.
5.  Celebrate your little reader!

I hope these free & fun printables keep your little ones inspired to read, read, & read!

Why You’ll Love Summer Reading Bingo

The fun thing about these free printable Bingo boards is they work for all ages.  Here’s a few tips for getting each age group excited to read this summer using these Bingo boards:

Little kids that can’t read yet: You can play summer reading Bingo even if you can’t read yet… it’s a great way to encourage them to sit with books for quiet time. If they sit with their books quietly for 10 minutes they can “check the box”.

Learning to Read: I find the pre-readers are the hardest group for summer reading because they really have to practice and it’s not always easy to get them to sit down to do that. I find this Summer Reading Bingo is a huge help with that group. It makes it more fun and even some of them are “silly” which makes their reading practice much less of a chore.

Elementary Readers: This is probably the easiest group for summer reading (in my opinion). They can read on their own, are probably getting into book series they want to complete and the ones that will get most into this Summer Reading Bingo and a reading “challenge”

Middle School Readers: If you make the prize something cool or something your bigger kid has been wanting to “earn” they’ll get a laugh out of completing many of these. Sometimes they need an extra push to get into the summer reading mode and this can really help. My kids sometimes get sick of just “reading before bed” at night. So me saying “well read at breakfast tomorrow instead” switches it up. You can also encourage them to help the younger readers in the house by using the silly prompts.

Need ideas for books for different age groups? Here are a few lists. You can also find many more book picks over on Instagram: @thechirpingmoms
