The Chirping Moms

Where to Wednesday: A Garden Party!

April 18, 2013

Our kids love to play outside. Now that spring is finally here to stay, we’ve been outside a lot. Maggie helped my mom garden a lot last year & constantly asks when we can start this year’s garden. I figured it would be fun to have a little garden party at our house this week to “practice” gardening before we plant our big vegetable garden next month. This party was so easy & the kids loved it. Having a party outdoors is my favorite. Here’s a look at our fun afternoon Garden Party:

Party Snacks
Pretzel “sticks”
Bunny Carrots: I used whole carrots instead of our usual baby carrots since they look like the ones we feed bunnies at the farm.
Mud Puddle Dip: Nutella & graham cracker sticks for dipping
Ants on a log: celery, peanut butter & raisins
Flower Sandwiches: Use a cookie cutter to make the flower shape & a celery stick for a stem.
Activities

 Digging for worms
What kids don’t love worms? I got mini gardening shovels for $1 & the kids dug for worms. They found quite a few!
Green Toys Build-a-Bouquet

The kids enjoyed taking some time to sit down at the picnic table & “Build-a-Bouquet”. This awesome toy from Green Toys is a big hit in our house. Now that Maggie doesn’t nap, we use this during “quiet time”. There are endless combinations of flowers to create (with 44 pieces), so each day you can build a new garden. It was also fun to take outside for our little party. The Build-a-Boutquets (and all Green Toys) are made in the USA from 100% recycled plastic milk jugs. Green Toys are environmentally friendly toys that are safe for kids.

You can enter to win a Green Toys Build-a-Bouquet in our Giant Earth Conscious giveaway by clicking here. You can also win many other great prizes from Green Toys by participating in their Green Toys Earth Day Challenge. There’s only 5 days left, so hurry up & check it out by clicking here.

Planting Seeds
We used mini flower pots & packets of green beans, pumpkins & carrots. The kids had so much fun filling the pots & then covering the seeds with dirt. Then they watered the plants. They are all excited to watch them grow!

I had intentions of them painting the flower pots too but our kids were too excited about the dirt & worms, so we skipped the paint. You could have your little gardeners paint the pots, play while they dry & then plant the seeds. Our kids had such a fun afternoon outside: gardening & getting very dirty!
