Where To Wednesday: A Toddler Birthday Party

March 28, 2013

I love planning parties. Typically the only other person involved in the planning is my husband & his job is picking up balloons & ice. He doesn’t ask any questions about the “theme” or “colors” & does a heck of a job helping to clean up! He’s a great co-host. Things changed this year, when Maggie came to me with a very definitive request for her 3rd birthday.  We attended her friend’s birthday party about a month before hers & I said “You know Maggie, next month it’s your birthday & we’ll have a party”. She said “I want a Simba party”.
She did not want a Lion King Party, as there are a few characters in the movie she’s not fond of. This party was to only be about Maggie & Simba (or Maggie as Simba as she liked to be called the entire party). She clearly knew what she wanted & was a co-host through each stage of the party planning. She wanted to see everything & had plenty of opinions to share. I’ll admit, it was not easy for me to let down my type A party planning tendencies & remember the party WAS all about Maggie & not about the party supplies all matching.
Lion King party supplies are in scarce supply, & things with just Simba don’t seem to exist. I went straight to Etsy to get to work. What we ended up with was a Simba/Lion/Safari theme. It was adorable & Miss Maggie loved it!
We started with birthday invites & printables from Fly Away Design. Maggie loved that the lion had a pink bow! The cupcake toppers were great & it was neat to have some with Maggie’s name & “3”. Fly Away Design offers a large selection of  professionally designed party printables. The shop owner really works hard to help you host a fun and coordinated event! The favor bag toppers from Fly Away Designs were one of my favorites. Maggie runs around all day “roaring” like a lion, so I thought it was so fitting that her party favors said “Thank you for roaring with me”!
Party Favors:
Maggie helped me find fun things to put inside the bags. She wanted Play Doh & I found a giant set of animal shaped cookie cutters to go along with the dough.
We had whale hair clips in the favor bags for Alex’s 1st birthday party & everyone loved them.
I thought it would be fun to have safari animal clips in Maggie’s favor bags. She has a lion clip of her own, that she wears every day, so when she saw these, she thought they were awesome! They clips are from Bella B. Studio (giveaway below). This shop has a great assortment of hair accessories & the shop owner was a delight to work with on making a set of animals for the party!
The shop owner also has an awesome shop for pacifier clips called Pacify Me. If your kids are MAM lovers like mine, she even has a clip for those. Both shops are adorable & affordable.
Decor:
I went to Part City for some fun tissue paper puffy decorations & zebra paper lanterns!
I found removable Lion King wall vinyls on Amazon (see picture below). They were in our family room for the party & we easily moved to the playroom after!
Our table center piece was probably Maggie’s favorite part of the decor. These adorable Simba lollipops were made by OMGaparty (giveaway below). They came fully assembled, lollipop & all. They made the whole table look festive & very much like a  “Simba party”. Kids loved stopping by the table for a lollipop.
Originally I planned to put these in the favor bags, but when they arrived, they were so cute, we had to use them as a decoration. I bought a square piece of foam from the craft store (the ones in the flower arrangement aisle). Then I took a piece of zebra scrapbook paper, covered the foam & popped the lollipops in! OMGaparty has really unique personalized party favors and decorations to make any party special and memorable.
We got a beautiful set of party signs & a banner from Beth’s Card Creations.
The banner was so well made & the animals on it were perfect. The animal signs were in some of the snacks, but quickly became animal masks for the kids. We actually still have them in our playroom & use them when daily when playing  “jungle”.
The small hang tags looked great on our mini pails of snacks & would also make great gift tags. Beth’s Card Creations has birthday-party themed banners, cupcake toppers and cards. Beth loves to do custom designs, so if you have anything in mind or want to know if a certain theme is available, just send her a message!
Party Activities:
While the kids arrived, played & had snacks, we took the kids a few at a time to make a cute lion craft. I’ll post a “how-to” on that tomorrow, so check back.

All Maggie talked about leading up to her party, was dancing with her friends to Lion King music. She asked if she could do freeze dance at the party. I thought it was a great idea! I got some maracas (2 for $1 at Target), safari party hats & animal print sunglasses. The kids dressed up & had quite the dance party! It was so much fun to watch.
After dancing, we brought out the pinata. The wonderful Pleasantly Pinatas designed a lion pinata to match Maggie’s invites. We got Alex’s whale pinata from Pleasantly Pinatas & once again, I was beyond impressed with the quality & how beautiful their pinatas are!
Maggie cried hysterically when the kids at Alex’s party broke the pinata & the beautiful pink whale was destroyed. Her lion pinata had a face made of foam, so even though the back of the pinata broke open & all the candy came out, the lions face was still in tact. It was the perfect pinata for Maggie! Pleasantly Pinatas creates custom handmade pinatas. If you don’t see the design/ party theme you’re looking for in the shop, custom orders are welcomed.
The party was a lot of fun & most important: Maggie had a great time. The next morning, she woke up & said “can we have the Simba party again today?”
