A Fun Staycation at Home for Kids

April 7, 2020

Today started our Spring Break. We didn’t have big plans this year, knowing a new baby would join our family just weeks before. Still, I could tell my kids were feeling a little down about being stuck at home the whole week of Spring Break, after being home the 3 weeks before too. Also, the past week, as the virus has spread so much across our state, Tom and I have become even more nervous and I’m sure the kids can feel that (even though we try not to scare them at all!). So, I decided this weekend to try and think of some ways to make a fun spring break for the kids with a fun staycation at our house.

We made our own “resort” and day one “staying there” was a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to having more things to enjoy at the resort the rest of the week. This is not meant to take up your whole day, rather one or two activities followed by playing outside or letting them continue to pretend to be at the hotel. With a new baby at home, there’s lots of free play for the bigger kids, but also some special Spring Break fun too. Stay tuned for some more photos and updates on the activities.

Our staycation was an excuse to break out our new spring clothes from my favorite, Bella Bliss. They kindly opened back up our coupon code for everyone to enjoy the rest of this month: chirping20 for 20% off!

The kids love how super soft the Bella Bliss clothes are and I love how easy they are to clean and keep looking nice. I’ve mentioned this before, but none of our clothes hold up as well. I have a few neutral colors from Bella Bliss that I got for Maggie that still look great for Teddy to wear: so 10 years and 5 kids of wear! Their clothes are classic, cute and cheering us up this Spring Break.

How to Have Spring Break at Home

Pack a Suitcase: The weather is just starting to change here so it’s the first few days my kids can get away with wearing shorts. So added some spring & summer clothes for each of the kids, along with a pair of pjs and a swimsuit to a suitcase. It sounds silly but having a suitcase downstairs to grab clothes from this week was exciting for them and a “change” from our regular routine.

Check in to the pretend hotel and get a room key: I made a little sign for the coffee table and let each of the kids stop in and give me their info. I found a few old hotel key cards but you could also use old gift cards, etc.

Ride the Elevator: How to make a DIY pretend elevator
Ok this took just a few minutes and the kids loved it. It’s on paper from a craft paper roll but you could also use the back side of a wrapping paper roll. Then I used a small piece of cardboard for the elevator button. When we stay at hotels the kids all fight over pressing the elevator button so they got a kick out of the fact that they could “press” the button whenever they walked through the room.

Visit the Pool: Let the kids visit the luxurious resort pool aka a blow up pool from Target 🙂

Spa Day: We’re doing this on one of the rainy days later this week. I put some slippers in a basket and we’ll paint nails and/or do a kid friendly face mask.

Restaurant: We haven’t visited a restaurant in a month now. Going out for breakfast, lunch or dinner is something our family really enjoys – both when we are on vacation and when we are enjoying our own town’s spots to eat. So we’ve missed being about to go out. This was SO simple… these are folded pieces of paper and on the inside I wrote a few drink choices and a few sandwich choices. As simple as it was, pretending it was a restaurant made them so happy.
