Luau Party Ideas for Kids: Great for a Moana Themed Party

July 27, 2017

Whether you’re looking for fun summer luau snacks and crafts or you are preparing for a Moana themed birthday party, this post is for you! My kids always love character themed parties but sometimes it’s tough to do (or gets so expensive). The best thing about a Moana themed luau party is that you can do a luau theme. It’s such an easy theme for a character inspired party. Since it’s the summer there are luau party supplies everywhere. If your child is going to want a Moana party this fall I suggest getting the supply early while they’re still readily available or right at the end of the summer when they all go on clearance (even better!).

I have four major Moana fans in my house. The girls love the movie, the songs and playing Moana. Their little brothers quickly caught on and now when they play one baby brother always ends up being Hei Hei! The snacks and activities in this post were a hit with my crew:

Moana Luau Party Ideas

Moana Luau Crafts:

DIY Sunglasses

This is one of the easiest, cutest party crafts I have done. The kids have to be old enough to use Sharpie markers, but if they are I would highly recommend this for a party. We did it at Maggie’s 1st grade end of the year luau and the kids (both boys and girls) loved it. I got the kit from Oriental Trading – they were plain white (flatter and less of a shinny finish than most sunglasses). Then I brought lots of bright colored Sharpies and let the kids create their own cool summer shades!

Hula Handprint

I love handprint crafts. Now that the girls are getting older I try to think of hand print crafts they’ll still want to do that incorporate their art and drawing. They both loved this craft! You make the child’s handprint in green and then once it dries, let them draw the rest of the hula girl themselves. Alex also had the idea to make tiny fingerprints at the top of the skirt to be the flowers. This is a great Moana craft! My girls call them their Moana handprints.

Easy Make Your Own Hula Skirt

This was easy, fun and looks really cute! To make your own hula skirt, all you need is: green crepe paper rolls, tape and ribbon. We tied a ribbon around their waist. Then cut stripes of crepe paper double the length you want is. Loop it around the ribbon and secure at the ribbon waist band with a piece of tape. You’ll be ready to hula in minutes and for much less than the cost of really hula skirts for the whole party!

Shells Ankle Bracelets

We got this kit from Oriental Trading. My girls said it came out very “real life hula”. This is a great Moana craft for girls 5+.

Moana Luau Activities:

Shark Bite Photo Booth

The Limbo

Freeze Dance to the Moana Soundtrack

A piñata or beach scavenger hunt filling these cute luau totes

Moana Luau Snack Idea:

Beach Sand Pudding Cups

Ingredients: Clear plastic cups, paper umbrellas, vanilla pudding mix, vanilla cookies (like Nilla wafers)

Directions: Put the cookies in a zip lock and smash them up. Follow the pudding mix directions to make the vanilla pudding. Put a small amount of pudding at the bottom of each cup. Next put a layer of smashed cookies, followed by a layer of pudding and then one last layer of smashed cookies. Top with a paper umbrella.

We got the flower leis, garland and individual flowers from Oriental Trading. They have tons of awesome luau supplies for a great price. We also found the Moana plates and napkins at Oriental Trading. Have fun celebrating!
