DIY Balance Beam

June 7, 2013

We spend a lot of time in our back yard. I am always looking for fun outdoor toys. When we are at the park, Maggie & Alex love to walk around the perimeter of the park &  “balance” on the ledge. I decided I wanted to try & make them a balance beam for the yard. I was going to just buy a piece of wood, but wanted something a little sturdier & higher off the ground. With my husbands help, we came up with a great balance beam for the girls. He put it all together for them & even spray painted it purple! It was very easy & cost about $15.

Supplies:

8 Foot long 4″ X 4″ piece of wood

2″ X 4″ cut into 4 pieces of equal length

6 L brackets

24 1.5″ screws

Spray paint or paint (optional)

Directions:

Place 2 of the pieces of the 2″X4″ at either end of the 4″X4″. Screw in the L brackets. Then place a 3rd piece in the middle of the 4″X4″ & screw in L brackets. Discard the 4th piece or save it for another project. Paint the beam, let it dry & then enjoy balancing on it!

All items can be found at Home Depot. My girls love their balance beam & play on it all the time. Please share your fun DIY projects for outdoor fun!

What a simple idea! Almost like a "duh" moment for me. My kids love walking around the playground perimeters, too. They would love to have one of these in the yard!

This is so neat! We almost bought one back around Christmas, but couldn't justify the expense. This, on the other hand, is completely doable!
