Simple Preschool Activities: Fall Leaves

October 12, 2020

This week’s theme is Fall Leaves! Are the leaves changing where you live? Have they started to fall?  This week we’ll make, taste, read and play with all things leaves! For more on our free simple preschool activities at home series, click here. The intro post tells all about this simple program, ages, etc and links to all of the past theme weeks. Enjoy this fun fall preschool theme!

Simple Preschool At-Home Activities: Fall Leaves

BOOKS:

  1. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves
  2. Because of an Acorn
  3. A Walk in the Forest
  4. We’re Going a Leaf Hunt
  5. Let it Fall

SONG: Leaves are Falling

(Sung to: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”)

Leaves are falling round the town
Watch them fall right on the ground
Autumn’s coming, it is true
Then comes winter just for you
Leaves are falling round the town
Falling, falling all around.

CRAFT: DOT PAINT TRESS

Dot Paint Trees: Cut out a tree trunk & glue to white paper. Child will use dot paints to add leaves. (Easy enough for young toddlers to do!)

CRAFT: LEAF WREATH

Leaf Wreath: Head out on a leaf hunt to get leaves. Cut out the middle part of the paper plate. Have child glue the leaves to the plate to make the wreath.

CRAFT: LEAF PEOPLE

This is a fun one for all ages. Collect leaves and then give a bowls of “supplies” like eyes, little sticks, pom poms, anything! Make your leaves into people.

SNACK: Make a Fall Tree Snack

I know usually we say “don’t play with your food” but in this case… let them play! All you need is pretzel sticks and different colored O shaped cereal. For example: Multi Grain O’s from Trader Joes, Apple Jacks, Cheerios, Cascadian Farms  Fruitiful O’s (I get from Whole Foods). Use the sticks & O’s to build a tree and  then eat it! I usually make one for them to model theirs after.

QUIET TIME BOX/ SENSORY:

For a fun leaf sensory activity, check out the mini kits from Ready, Set, Dough. All of this came in the mini kit ($8.50) and has been tons of fun.

SCIENCE: PRESERVE LEAVES IN WAX

How to Preserve Leaves with Wax:

I used to do this with my mom. It’s a fun way for the kids to save leaves before they crumble up all over your floor. The ones we made today didn’t come out so great, but I have seen people make them the size & shape of a placemat & use them for fall decor. They are great place mats because they wipe clean easily.

How to:

  1. Place newspaper (or something like it) on the ironing board
  2. Place one piece of wax paper on the newspaper – wax side up
  3. Arrange leaves
  4. Place another piece of wax paper on top – wax side down
  5. Place newspaper on top & iron for about 30 secs on medium heat

TV SHOW: Sid the Science Kid “Don’t Forget About the Leaves” which is episode 29 and can be found on Netflix.
