Can you believe this costume involved NO SEWING? Both of these were honestly so easy to make.
I have been trying to think of a way to make a comfortable lion costume for a long time. I always think babies and toddlers dressed up as lions are adorable but my kids would never leave a “mane” on. Then, one day Miles was wearing his Primary.com yellow hoodie and I thought “I could make a lion costume out of this”. I wanted to think of the easiest way to do it, so people that don’t know how to sew could make it too. This lion costume took me about 20 minutes and required only 1 hoodie, 2 t-shirts and a pair of scissors. That’s it!
How to Make a Lion Costume out of a Hoodie & T-shirt
Supplies: I got all of the supplies from Primary.com It’s the only place to get super soft solid colored clothes for kids and we love it. I ordered:
- The Baby Hoodie in Sunshine (there’s a kids’ size too in the same color)
- Two t-shirts: one sunshine and one tangerine. I used the “slim tee” and it was thin/easy to make the strips
Directions: Cut strips of fabric from the t-shirts. They should be about as wide as your thumb. Then, cut pairs of two small holes/slits close to each other along the hood. You want to try and only cut the top layer of the hood, then none of the mane will touch the child’s head. Continue this around the hood. Then thread 2 t-shirt strips through each pair of holes. When you are done, try it on your child and see where you have to give their mane a hair cut. I had to trim mine around my sons eyes. Then, you are all done!
We added yellow pants and drew on a nose and some whiskers.
DIY Kid’s Lion Tamer Costume:
- Red Peasant Top (this one if from Primary.com)
- Black pants (these are from Primary.com)
- Black shoes (found these on Babychelle.com)
- Black hat
- Gold trim and buttons to decorate (found on Amazon)
- White gloves
- Hoop or whip (please keep safety in mind!)
Directions: I used the gold trim I found on Amazon to make 3 stripes across the top of the tunic. I used hot glue to secure it. Then I used hot glue to add the gold buttons at the end of the gold trim. Then we added in all the other parts of the costume and our Lion Tamer was ready for her lion!
