10 Fun & Easy Sandwich Ideas for Kids

August 24, 2017

School is less than one week away.  We have been busy in our house getting backpacks cleaned out & ready, organizing school clothes, & making sure we have all the last minute errands done before the kids head back to school.  One of the things that I have done this week is prepare our pantry and get ready for daily lunch packing.  During the summer, our pantry turns into a free for all as we are in and out all summer long with traveling & summer adventures.  First, I cleaned out all the shelves from all of the half-eaten boxes of stale crackers and cereal.  Then, I restocked the shelves with some easy breakfast options and some of our favorite packed lunchbox items.  To get back into lunch packing mode (& to think of a few fun & new lunch ideas for the year), the kids and I had fun packing our own little lunches this week together.  Today, we are going to share 10 Fun & Easy Sandwich Ideas for Kids.

When packing school lunches, I follow a pretty simple guideline that makes packing lunches easy.  There is one main part to the lunch (which is often a sandwich).  For the sides, I let the kids pick one vegetable, one fruit, another side (which is often crackers, chips, or a granola bar), & a small dessert.  The kids each pick a drink to go with their lunch.  Choices include: their water bottle, a milk box, or a juice box.  I keep all drink options in a tub together on the floor of the pantry so the kids can literally grab their drink of choice and place in their lunchbox.   The brand of juice boxes that the kids prefer is one of our tried & true favorites, Juicy Juice.  All Juicy Juice juice products are made from real juice, with sweetness that comes only from the fruit and no added sugar.  Juicy Juice products contain no high fructose corn syrup, no cane sugar, and no artificial sweeteners.  Their juice boxes are a staple in our pantry.

Today’s goal is to share 10 Fun & Easy Sandwich Ideas for Kids to help keep packed lunches exciting everyday.  None of these sandwich ideas require lots of preparation and supplies.  Instead, they are supposed to be easy to make and can be made with items that are already in your kitchen.  When I pack lunches, I try to keep it simple and mix it up so my kids don’t get bored of the same item everyday.  I also find that if I help them pick out items from the grocery store each week that they will eat & have them help fill their lunchbox with food from our kitchen, then they are more likely to eat their lunches.

10 Fun & Easy Sandwich Ideas for Kids

1.  Mini Sandwich Kabobs

Make a simple sandwich.  Cut in half lengthwise & then cut each half into thirds to create six squares.  Using a toothpick, create mini sandwich kabobs using vegetables.

2.  DIY Uncrustables

Cut out a circle using a glass from two pieces of sandwich bread.  Spread your filling in the middle of the circle leaving space around the edge with nothing on it.  We used Nutella, but another common filling is peanut butter and jelly.  Using a fork, seal the sandwich shut.  Place on parchment or wax paper & freeze.  Pull out in the morning and place in lunchbox to thaw for lunchtime.

3.  Stained Glass Sandwich

On one piece of bread, cut out a fun shape.  Make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich with the cut-out bread on top of the jelly.  It will look like a stained glass creation!

4.  Cookie Cutter Sandwich

This is a classic favorite.  Make a regular sandwich & using the kids’ favorite shapes, cut out the sandwich.  This is my shark-loving son’s favorite lunch & it’s so easy to make!

5.  Sushi Sandwich

Place one piece of bread in between two different pieces of wax or parchemnt paper.  Using a rolling pin, roll the bread until it’s really thin & flat.  Wrap up your sandwich ingredients, just like you are rolling sushi.  Cut into sushi looking slices & serve in lunchbox.

6.  Black & White Sandwiches

Use two different pieces of bread.  In this photo, I used one slice of pumpernickel bread & one slice of country white bread.  Cut out the same number of shapes in each bread (I did three flowers).  Pop them out of the bread and fit them back into the other piece of bread.  One side of the bread is the dark brown/black pumpernickel with white flowers and this side is the country white with dark flowers.  Make sandwich as usual.

7.  Mini Sandwich Pizza Slices

This is a super easy sandwich to make.  Make the sandwich.  Using a pizza cutter, cut the sandwich into mini triangles just like pizza slices!

8.  Flower Sandwich

Make sandwich & cut out two big circles using a large circle cookie cutter.  Using kitchen scissors, cut out flower petals just by cutting straight lines close to the center.  Add a round piece of cheese for the center of the flower.

9.  Sprinkle Sandwich

This sandwich is my four year old’s favorite, but we save it for more special days since it involves sprinkles.  Spread butter on one side of the bread.  Sprinkle with sprinkles.  On the other piece of bread, use a cookie cutter to cut out a shape.  Place the cut-out bread onto the sprinkle bread & it will be a fun sprinkle sandwich!

10.  Sandwich Faces

Now, this is a fun one that doesn’t involve anything to do with the sandwich.  Place a regular sandwich in a bag & decorate the bag.  You can use stick-on google eyes & Sharpies and have a fun creation within seconds!

I love the idea of including kids in the packing process. I also love your strategy, instead of just arbitrarily throwing things in their lunch, which I”m guilty of, actually having a plan.
