A Fun Summer Reading Log for Kids

June 26, 2022

We have some great summer printables! Today i’m sharing a fun summer reading log for kids. When I was coming up with some new printable ideas, one mom mentioned that it would be helpful to not just log the number of books and titles, but also to “rate” the book and have a section to note something about the book. I thought it was a great idea and came up with this:

Fun Summer Reading Log

Here kids can list the title of the book they read, then their favorite character. This will help them remember the book a little better if someone asks them about it. Last is the spot to rate the book. This will be fun to look at when summer ends – the kid scan see what their favorites were! This is a great sheet for friends to exchange. If your child fills up the sheet, make a photo copy and let them pass it on to a friend for some book recommendations. You could even trade the actual books too!

The fun thing about using this free printable summer reading log is it works for all ages. Here’s a few tips for getting each age group excited to read this summer using these Bingo boards:

Little kids that can’t read yet: You can do summer reading  even if you can’t read yet… it’s a great way to encourage them to sit with books for quiet time. If they sit with their books quietly for 10 minutes they can tell you how many stars it gets and you can write the title.

Learning to Read: I find the pre-readers are the hardest group for summer reading because they really have to practice and it’s not always easy to get them to sit down to do that. I find keeping a log is a huge help with that group. It makes it more fun and even also encourages them to practice writing (the title). Then when they fill the whole sheet you can offer a prize or fun activity.

Elementary Readers: This is probably the easiest group for summer reading (in my opinion). They can read on their own, are probably getting into book series they want to complete. This is a great group to encourage them to share their logs with friends for book ideas.

Middle School Readers: This group might need a little push to get reading in the summer. Mine get a prize for filling a sheet: friends sleep over, walk to ice cream shop etc. Then if they fill 5 sheets they get a big prize.

Need ideas for books for different age groups? Here are a few lists. You can also find many more book picks over on Instagram: @thechirpingmoms
