May Activities for Kids + Free Printable Activity Calendar

May 2, 2020

Looking for May activities for kids? You are in the right place! May is one of my favorite times of year — the weather is finally warming up, we can get outside again, and there is just so much good stuff happening.

I put together this May activity calendar for kids because I find that having just one simple activity planned each day makes such a difference. It gives the preschoolers something to do while big kids finish up schoolwork, and it gives everyone something to look forward to once the day is done. Nothing complicated. Just one thing.

Grab the free printable below, hang it somewhere everyone can see it, and let it do the work for you!

How to Use This May Activity Calendar

This calendar is meant to be a guide, not a strict schedule. Some days you’ll do the activity first thing in the morning. Some days it’ll happen right after lunch. Some days you’ll skip it entirely and that is totally fine! These May activities for kids are designed to be simple, flexible, and totally doable with whatever you already have at home

A few things that make it work really well in our house:

  • Print it and post it. On the fridge, in the playroom, wherever the kids will see it. They love checking off what’s coming next.
  • Let the kids pick. On days when the energy is off, letting them swap in a favorite activity from earlier in the month keeps everyone happy.
  • Keep supplies simple. Almost everything on this calendar uses stuff you already have at home. That’s intentional!
  • Follow along on Instagram. I share these activities in action over at @thechirpingmoms all month long so you can see exactly how we do them.

May Activity Ideas for Kids: The Full Calendar Breakdown

Here are all 30 ideas on the calendar, with a little more detail on each one so you know exactly what you are getting into!

Spring and Nature Activities

May is the perfect month to lean into everything happening outside. Things are growing, the weather is cooperating, and kids have so much energy to burn!

  • Seed activities–-Plant something together and start a seed journal. Kids love checking on their plants every day to see what’s happening. It turns into a whole thing!
  • Worm activities – Head outside after a rain and do a little worm exploration. It sounds simple but leads to the best conversations!
  • Make your own binoculars- A quick toilet paper roll craft that turns into hours of backyard “exploration.” Kids take this so seriously and it is adorable.
  • Paper plate flowers A sweet spring craft that pairs really well with the seed activities if you want to go a little deeper on the gardening theme.
  • Watermelon flower pot- This painted watermelon craft is such a fun one for May and early summer. It looks impressive and is way easier than it looks.
  • Go for a walk– Sometimes the simplest activity is the best one. A neighborhood walk with no agenda counts!
  • Collect and paint rocks — Head outside and gather a handful of rocks, then bring them in to paint. Simple, low-mess, and the results are always so cute.
  • Toy Car Wash– Fill a bin with soapy water and let the kids scrub down all their toy cars. Keeps them busy for ages and they think it is the best thing ever!

Creative and Craft Activities

These are the ones that work really well for rainy May days or for keeping little hands busy while big kids wrap up schoolwork.

May Activity for kids: Paper Towel Magic

  • Tulip potato stamping-Cut a potato in half, carve a simple tulip shape, dip in paint, and stamp away. The kids always love seeing how it turns out.
  • Shaving cream play (shaving cream on a tray with toy cars, try practicing letters, etc):Squirt shaving cream onto a tray and let kids go to town — drive toy cars through it, practice letters, mix in a little food coloring. Easy setup, easy cleanup!
  • Paper towel magic–  This rainbow activity is one of our absolute favorites and always gets a big reaction from kids.
  • Jello play dough-A homemade play dough recipe that smells amazing and is so easy to make together.
  • Rainbow paper plate -Another colorful winner from our rainbow crafts collection.
  • Tape resist art-Tape off a design, letters, or shapes on paper or canvas. Paint over the whole thing, peel off the tape, and reveal the magic underneath. Kids go crazy for this one.
  • Make a fort– Blankets, cushions, clothespins, couch cushions. Let them engineer their own little hideout and then have a book picnic inside it!
  • Trace a child-Roll out butcher paper and trace one of the kids life-size. They love decorating their outlines and it keeps them busy forever.

Book and Learning Activities

We love sneaking a little learning into May activities. The spring themes make it so easy and the kids barely notice!

  • Book picnic — Grab a blanket, head outside (or set up inside!), and bring a big stack of books. We did this three times one month and nobody complained once. It is one of those simple things kids actually remember.
  • Obstacle course — Set one up in the backyard with whatever you have. Kids can time each other and reset it over and over. Great for burning off energy!
  • Try a new yard game- We have a great list of 25 easy outdoor games if you need inspiration. This is on the calendar a few times because it is always a hit. There’s also this solitaire game

Patriotic Activities for Memorial Day

The end of May is a wonderful time to talk to kids about Memorial Day in a fun, age-appropriate way. These activities make it easy!

Patriotic Snack ice cream cone

  • Patriotic handprint — Dip little hands in red, white, and blue paint and make something together. Sweet and simple.
  • Learn a patriotic song — “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “America the Beautiful” are both great ones. Kids pick them up so fast!
  • Patriotic craft — Flags, stars, pinwheels — there are so many easy options and kids love anything red, white, and blue.
  • Patriotic snack — This fun patriotic snack is easy to put together and always a hit at our house.
  • Memorial Day family picnic — Head outside for a cookout or backyard picnic to wrap up the month. Such a nice way to end May!

Mother’s Day

  • Mother’s Day — rest and relax all day! This one is non-negotiable. Put it on Day 10 and let someone else take the lead. You have earned it!

As we head into May, I hope this activity calendar gives your family something to look forward to each day—whether it’s a quick craft, a moment outside in the sunshine, or an easy setup that keeps little hands busy while big kids finish their schoolwork. These ideas are meant to be simple, flexible, and fun, helping you break up long days at home without adding extra stress. Even one small activity can shift the mood, spark creativity, or help kids burn off some of that endless energy.

I’ll continue sharing May activity highlights over on Instagram, so be sure to follow along if you want to see these ideas in action throughout the month. And remember, this calendar is just a starting point—feel free to mix things up, repeat favorites, or swap in activities that fit your family best. Here’s to warmer days ahead, more moments outside, and finding little pockets of joy together this May.

Tips for Making the Most of May Activities

One activity a day is enough. This calendar is not meant to fill every hour. Just one thing each day gives everyone something to look forward to without wearing anyone out.

Repeat what works. Book picnics and yard games are on the calendar more than once because they are that good. No shame in going back to favorites!

Let older kids take ownership. Many of these activities are easy enough for older kids to set up on their own, which is such a win.

Use what you have. Almost everything on this calendar uses supplies you already have at home. No special shopping trip required!
